Help - laptop screen just blanked out!!! Oh dear!

Have tried restarting the laptop and no difference. It was working fine and I took it downstairs. When my friend tried to carry on using it it is all light greyed out but the computer sounds like it is on. Have I broken it? My husband says there may be a function key I have pressed accidentally which turns screen off? Anyone got any ideas other then buy another computer? Thanks. Fairy

No Bios screen would indicate to me that the local display settings are wrong. IE. Fn+F?
Try changing the brightness, contrast and screen position in the first instance.

Try Fn and F7

connect it to an external monitor to see if laptop is working correctly.

this seems to me llike a pinched cable in the hinge, or a gpu error.

Connect an external monitor to diagnose this, its unlikely to be software.

If you connect another monitor, try a system restore, but this is unlikely to do anything.

New lappy im thinking?
