I will be visiting California in July and need to stay in touch via my mobile. I am on 3 and they will charge me £1.40 per minute to make calls back to the UK and something like 90p to receive calls. I imagine I will only need to make around 10 calls back to the UK, each of around 5 minutes duration. I will probably receive a similar number but of only around 3 minutes duration each.

Even with this limited use, the cost will work out at around £100. I can purchase a PAYG Sim card through 0044 for £29.99 which would reduce my total costs to around £50 but I will have a different number for the duration.

I can purchase a service through UK2Abroad which will give me a new SIM card and retention of my number but it costs £25 for the SIM Card and £25 as a minimum top-up - although I probably wouldn't need to incur any costs after this. Hence, around £50 total cost.

Is there a better (cheaper) method?

Make sure you have a quad-band phone else all the prep in the world won't make your phone work!

I've got 4 quad band phones to choose from!!! Leaves me with only the call costs as a problem.
