If you google it there are fixes out there - just type missing dvd drive vista!

Have you downloaded and ran the DevCon utility?

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista

Also have you fully patched the new Windows Vista installation as well?

TANBOY, got your message - if you go into the BIOS during the start-up of your computer, does it properly detect your DVD Drive?

Also can you post in the manufacturer and model type of your laptop but also whether you have any other information listed for your DVD Drive - do you have all of the device drivers installed (along with chipset support)?

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Right, I think the best way to rule out if it's hardware is to either boot the laptop off of the Windows Vista installation DVD or boot off of a live Linux CD.

Can you remove the DVD Drive from your laptop (i.e. is it removable)? If you can, you might want to shutdown your laptop, remove the DVD Drive, start-up the computer to ensure it no longer detects the drive, shut it down and then reinstall the DVD Drive & finally boot it up to see if it's detected within the BIOS but also detected within Windows Vista...just a thought, as it might force the OS to reinstall the basic device driver support needed.

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

From what has been passed on, the BIOS picks it up but its the Vista OS which has lost connectivity to it.
