Help, need to push for a higher contract rate.

I recently interviewed for a contract role and all along i did not discuss the rate with the agent, so when I finally asked him he played it down and started saying tight budget and stuffs, saying the company wanted to pay around the 150ish range. However i called up another agent for the same role and we negotiated for a rate and settled for 230/day. problem is i have already interviewed with the first agent and the employer.

I dont want no agent ripping me off of about £100/day.

please advise.

If you've already discussed and accepted the rateI think you will be hard pushed to negotiate a higher rate for yourself. If it was a case of 'well we only want to pay XX amount' and nothing was agreed then you can say that you 'have thought about the pay and feel that XX amount is more appropriate' - good luck

phone the original person up and simply tell them that you know the rate should be higher as you have spoken to folk elsewhere........sometimes being straightforward & honest works!!

Thanks guys, we did not agree on the rate earlier, i raised the issue but the agent sidestepped it, now he comes back after the interview and started all the tight bugdet line stuff.

Tell the Agent you have negotiated £230 by another agent before interview for exact the same role so tight budgets equates to higher margin for the agent...

If you want me to go then give me a higher rate otherwise I will have to look elsewhere!

Long Term - £150 a day now maybe £200 a day next week different Job!

Ive been contracting a long time now (IT) and the third question I always ask is how much are they offering? (the first being what is the role and the second is where is it)

Not sure what you are contracting for but i keep being asked what my daily rate is. i used to give them a price but they always talked me down so now i always reply to that question with "well what is being offered for this role". Then i decide if its acceptable or if i need to say "well im really looking for xxx". that way you start going up and not down.

Unfortunately, the words "agent" and "ripoff" always go together.
Basically their entire job is to fill roles with as little cost as possible.

I guess you havent signed a contract with the first agent yet but you probably agreed to let them represent you. You will probably struggle to get the company who interviewed you to use a different agent when another agent has already put you forward and they will be paying the same to whatever agent.

Your best bet is to push the first agent for a higher rate. Say you have been offered more somewhere else. You dont need to say its for the same job!

I'm also contract.

I think you should take into consideration that if you decide to go with this agent that is offering the higher rate that if the current agents can sue for a "finders fee" as they intrroduced you and the client, it may put that contract in jepoardy as there will be legal battles involving the client (which they dont want) also they may see you as a typical money grabbing conny who may jump ship for an extra £1 in future)

tread carefully.

Seems to be a fair few contractors on here. My husbands also an IT contractor, it was him that introduced me to hotukdeals. Glad to see my husbands not the only careful (tight) contractor around, looking for bargains on here lol!
