Download Speed: 4449 kbps (556.1 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 242 kbps (30.3 KB/sec )
is that a good connection?
#6
You are on a 8mb connection and that's only if you are right next to the exchange. That's about what I would expect an average person to be getting.
#7
Do a few tests at various times and take the average.
That one is just under 4.5meg
banned#8
Download Speed = 4449kbps, thats approximately 4mb connection.
Upload Speed - 242kbps, thats approximately a quarter of a meg.

The download speed is about spot on....but yer upload should be around 400-500kbps for a good connection
#9
Download speed should be a lot closer to 8mb.
If it says 8 then I would expect 8.
Mine is capped at the moment (downloading too much) but when it is uncapped later on (off peak) then I will run the test.
I have 8mb on AOL.
My upload speed uncapped is also very slow about 50kb/sec. Don't know why, it's always been like that.
banned#10
divide the kb speed by 1000 to get mb rate so perfect 8mb should be 8000kbps. Generally you need cable to guarantee these rates hence the BT's etc of this world always stating 'up to 8mb'.

Shouldnt be allowed really.

That site didnt work for me. Continually quoted 500kbps rate exactly even with 3 refreshes. Speedtest quoted an average of 19600kbps with 776kbps upload rate.

It depends on how close to the exchange you are on. I pay for 8mb connection and can get a maximum of 4mb, that's life.
#13
computeractive are fighting to get it changed so that providers give you more realistic figures for your particular distance from exchange.
I would consider 4 meg good, but then again I am 2 meg max....tested at 1675kbps down & 376kbps up....
If your internet connection feels slower recently have you installed any new software? particular security suite?

you have 20meg.....jealous, that would be like me going form dial up to original 512 broadband
#15
i was under the impression that not all exchanges could handle all speeds, i think mine can only do 5mb, this might be a lie (or something i imagined) though, can someone confirm this, or tell me the site where youy can check how far you are from the exchange

In college there's fast internet so I use it to download stuff through wifi to my laptop.
They've never said anything. If they question me I'll just say that I didn't know what it was doing! lol

Apparently they are using cable that is channelled through the water pipes...took me bloody 15 minutes to find it but here is the article http://news.zdnet.co.uk/internet/0,1000000097,39286165,00.htm  don't know if they are using the waste pipes too but could make your upload speed rather ******

wot does capped mean? sorry

The term capped refers to when your internet service provider limits your download speeds at certain times because you have either downloaded too much or have gone over your download allowance. This is done due to the fair usage policy most ISPs follow.

For example, I download too much data so my 8mb internet connection is capped during peak surfing hours around 6pm-11pm to ~50kb/s download speed. Off peak I'm back up to ~800kb/s.

That's insane fast! 50mb!
Where do you live and what ISP do you have?
Or is your speed from a workplace/school/college etc?
#38
Halls connection but it goes faster than that, was downloading at 9300kB a second had a big shock. that was with a download accelerator though
#40
That is pure madness! I suppose your only limitation is the server at the other end where you're downloading from then!

Watch HD trailers much? How can you make the most of that speed of connection?
