Ok so I bought an external hard drive to move my music onto because my laptop is getting really slow due to the memory being used up

the problem is that when i move the album folder onto the harddrive and remove it from my laptop i then cant listen to the songs in my itunes - the album still appears in itunes but a pop up appears saying that the properties cannot be found and then i am offered the option to locate the file

is there a way to overcome this problem - i dont want to have to locate a file every time i play a song

thanks

Having lots of music in iTunes will NOT slow your laptop down.

Music and other files are stored on your hard disk and it does not matter how many or few files you have on your hard disk it will not effect your laptop performance (unless your hard disk is totally full up then it may effect perfomance).

Only programs that are actually RUNNING (that is held in RAM memory) have an effect on performance.

The more programs you have running, and the more your RAM fills up, that will slow your computer down.

Also dont confuse LAPTOP performance with BROADBAND performance. If your broadband is slow this is almost nothing to do with your laptop but your connection speed.

If I'm correct, iTunes works as a information store, knowing exactly where the music is on your hard drive. Now that you have moved the music to the external drive, iTunes cannot see where it has moved to. I think you need to point to it somehow or drag the main music folder and drop it into iTunes and that might work.

Hope this makes sense.

thanks for your advice but i already knew that - my harddrive is literally full which was causing performance problems so hopefully this should resolve them

I think you need to change the root in your Itunes settings its probably still set to your music folder on drive C and your new drive is D maybe
