what sort of connections does the tv have?

Check your laptop for an output video port. Could be D-sub, DVI or HDMI.

Same for your TV, work out what you need from the pictures, for example; DVI Laptop to HDMI TV - like this.

am using a vga cable at the moment, but i only manage to get a square picture which is really low resolution with no sound, every time i try n raise the resolution i loose the picture completely :/

The laptop's output port is VGA/D-Sub?

The same for the TV?

You won't get sound through it, as VGA cables only carry video signals. You'll need to use the speakers on the laptop, or connect it to the TV / External speakers via another cable.

Are you messing with the resolution settings on the laptop, or the TV?

lol silly me i didn't know about the sound thing, :P
on the laptop, would be happy if i could make it widescreen but it doesn't seem to want to let me :/

I haven't plugged mine into the TV for ages, so can't remember for sure what settings I changed. I'm sure someone who has their PC/laptop hooked up in this way will be able to help you better than me :-D

Just try this:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm

To update the graphics drivers.

If that don't work, go here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2800
And then choose your operating system. With any luck it should give you more resolutions to choose.

You know where to go to change the resolution correct?
#14
yeah, was playing with that earlier would only seem to work on the lowest resolution
#15
You may need to change the refresh rate which I think is in the advanced options.
