Help needed regarding Sly card

Just bought this yellow house card on Ebay in order to get channels 4 and 5 - but it does not work and the thieving seller will not refund. I expect I will have to go through the dispute process to get money back but I wondered what would happen if I went to Sky and asked them to authorise it.
Would they do it? If yes, would it cost and would it be tied to one box. What about telephone. Bearing in mind I already have another box and card in another room I don't really want to get Sky involved. I don't have any paid subscriptions. Would appreciate advice from Sky employee or other knowledgeable person.

When you say it doesn't work, what is the exact problem with it? The card will need to be 'paired' with you Sky receiver in order for it to receive the channels - even after you have done this it will take a few hours (and even sometimes a couple of days) in order for the additional channels to activate.

SLY card? very apt in this situation! How much did you pay? You can get them from sky for £20 all above board for free to view channels!
Hoow long have you left the card in the box? It can sometimes take a couple of days to become active as they send some sort of signal that activates them.

I find doing a forced system update usually helps.
Put tv on the av channel ready.

1) Make sure signal is at 50% plus
2) Turn off at mains
3) Hold the backup button in and turn aback on at mains whilst holding the back-up button, keep holding for about 10 seconds and all the lights on the front should come on and on-screen will say system update in progress (or words to that effect).

You only need to pair the card with the box for premium channels, movies sports etc.

If it's not working as soon as you stick it in then it's a dud.

I thought that seeing as its a second hand card (and has already been paired to it's previous owner's receiver) you would need to pair the card to the new box, as it would still be married to the old one?

Yes - that's all.

I meant to say both boxes are only for free channels. I will try leaving it in etc but past experience tells me that if it does not work straight away it will not work.
Are there any Sky employees who know what would happen if I phone?
Thanks for all help so far.

Nah I brought back a Sky card (which is years old) when returning home from abroad, stuck the card in to a spare STB and up comes FTV straight away.

Even when I had Sky+ installed all channels except for premium stuff worked straight off (they couldn't pair it up due to problems at their end).

You don't need the card paired.. If you leave the card in the box for a day or so the card will reactivate..

Hi,
As already stated earlier in the thread, if you don't expect to receive premium channels your card does not need to be paired to the box you're using.
I have had several "disabled" yellow house cards in the past, - one of which had been unused for over 2 years, - all of them were successfully resurrected by leaving them in the box for between 24 and 72 hours with a live dish attached, - hope this is of some help.

Thanks for all advice. Seller has had a change of heart and is going to refund the payment. First I am going to try leaving the card in the box for 3 days on ITV and see if anything happens - I will be amazed if it does but I will post the result here whichever way it goes.

Left it in the box from Friday to Monday lunchtime and still the same - no picture on 4 or 5.
