Help needed with ebay dispute for Sun Newspaper Alton Towers Tickets.

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the free tickets that were given away in the Sun Newspaper being sold on ebay and then cancelled by Alton Towers .
I sold 2 on ebay a few weeks ago for yesterday. Now the buyer has opened a paypal dispute requesting a refund stating they were refused entry. That actually stated
'Alton Towers said the tickets that were supplied to me should never have been sold on, they were not transferrable.'

Has anyone heard of this happening. There seem to be hundreds of tickets sold on ebay, surley they can't all be refused entry?

So my first problem is did they really get refused entry and I need to refund them, and also as I couldn't make that date I purchased a set of tickets off ebay for this Saturday, so will the same thing happen to me?!!

This could turn out an expensive mistake.....

Any thoughts appreciated.

Find out what happens with your tickets on saturday, if they get refused then give the buyer their money back, if they get accepted ask for proof that they got declined.
#2
Obviously they cottoned on,however you can't be entirely sure that the buyer is being completely honest that they were refused.
It did say not transferable so it goes to say that you shoudn't been selling them, probably should tried to swap them, thought others were doing swaps on here, even though that probably not allowed either but like if you sell, you leave yourself open to this.
#3
do they have your name on the ticket or anything?
#4
We couldnt make the date of our tickets so sold mine on ebay and as far as I know they used them, I am still waiting feedback but the tickets were for June 9th and I think i would have received a message by now if they were refused.
i think they are trying it on as hundreds have been sold that way, or they couldnt make that date so are using that excuse to get money back.

A few wks back might been longer, someone was on here saying about cricket? tickets they sold on eBay that the buyer claimed they were the wrong sort, like that they were lower priced ones than stated,it was after the event they started to complain too.Their buyer opened up a dispute with paypal, but paypal didn't honour it and seller kept their cash.

I had the Alton tower tickets and went on the 2nd of June, they never even looked at them, I just got told to stick them in the turnstile and off I went.. The tickets don't have your name or anything on them, just a barcode with the date on them. Sounds like the buyer is at it to me!!
#7
Yeah i think the buyer is trying it on. Ask for the unused tickets to be returned to you (will prob say alton towers confiscated though) before even thinking about refunding

Thanks for the input, having just been doing a bit of searching I came across this (I hope I can link to ebay site if not an actual item ??)

So if above is true, they could have cancelled mine from the picture I used when selling. Interesting that the seller still won the dispute, but if I feel the buyer is now telling the truth I would certainly refund them.

Still have the problem of the tickets for saturday, can't quite make out the serial number in the picture myself, maybe others could!
For those that interested i'm sure you can track down the ones I sold/won on ebay, username same as here....

Yeah i guess they could have cancelled them from the barcode if they could see the picture.

Sounds to me like someone is trying to get a free day out!! Ive been alton towers for the past couple of years using tickets from The Sun and 2 occisons they were tickets I had bought or have been given to me, you dont give the tickets to anyone you enter though an automatic barrier because all the tickets From The Sun are barcoded so the person who won them wont of actually of given the tickets for anyone to see. Ive also got some for Sept 09 and no where on the ticket does it have my name or any of my details plus when I was given tickets last year I called Alton Towers and ask if I could use someone else tickets and they said its fine. I think someone is trying to get money out of you!! hope this helps but dont give them a refund because when the people commited to buy it say twice that ' Do you aguee to go ahead with this sale and to be aware that some place may refuse enter??

Hi there just read your subject. This same thing has happened to me. Sold my tickets for May 27th 2011 - yesterday and buyer now saying the tickets were refused and they had to pay a concession of £25 each. They reckon that Alton Towers are trawling Ebay and making notes of tickets numbers and that a Loss Prevention Department are on the gates checking tickets. Buyer putting in a claim throught Paypal. How was your situation resolved. Would appreciate some feedback.

I just felt at the time the buyer was being honest, so I refunded. Guess as the tickets were free at the time I didn't really lose out much.

Since then I put another set on ebay (always went for the offer in the hope I would get some during school holidays) and the last time had an email from ebay threatening to close my account for listing 'freely obtained' tickets.

Given up on these now....

#17

#18
great mine just come today for Sunday 27 April.Alton towers here i come.thank you sun+

Reading all above comments; conclusion that hide the serial number when sell & buy tickets with hidden serial numbers
#20
hi, all yes i would just use a Alton towers pic or the back of the ticket.do no show the serial numbers / bar code just to be on the safe side.

I read on a forum only a couple of days ago that they'd just come back from Alton Towers with tickets bought on ebay and they'd been cancelled when they tried to put them in the turnstile. Eventually AT let them in at £25 each. So I think it does happen - if selling / buying just use the AT logo. Loads of bargains this year cos The Sun gave out so many free ones. Prices for 2 tickets are not reaching even 20 quid unless it's a weekend
#22
hi, sold some on ebay but had to change the AT logo because of Alton tower copy right ?? on they logo.use a pic from google like the Alton towers terry bear ?? and don`t show the bar code if you use a ticket pic ,but you should get in OK i always have.

It is risky buying them on ebay now. If they see the ticket numbers they will cancel them. I do think if you cannot make your day swap them instead if you can. People do send off for them just to sell and make money which is bad really when they were free!!! I don't blame them for cancelling the tickets. They'll stop the promotion soon because of it and ruin it for the genuine people who do the offer to get a fab day out. They will eventually end up printing names on the tickets and needing id on the day!
#24
hi,
i have heard of this happening, apparently towers are looking on e bay for any that have the barcode & number under it visible, they are then canceling at their end so people are being refused entry, the reason behind it is that the tickets are issued to you & are not transferable, lots of people are now covering up the barcode to stop them being cancelled.
if you ask me its all a bit petty at the end of the day once in there you will prob be buying food & drinks & stuff so whats the problem??????

Ive just heard bout this four tickets for this tuesday was ones that come to mine n a friends but I brought two of ebay end april as six us going n just heard bout barcode. checked ebay n it was showing kids guna be gutted if we get refused I wont have enough to pay for them to get on :( hope we all get in
#27
XopsX did your tickets gain entry that you brought on ebay?
#28
just been reading up on a forum, and a girl who works at at said that staff have been looking at tickets for sale on ebay, and if they can see the bar codes on the tickets for sale they are cancelling them.
She said she works there and loads of people are upset when the tickets have been not accepted on the turnstile.

So if you do want to go ahead and buy tickets, it would be worth trying for ones that don't have the bar codes showing.

I spoke to a lady on Facebook, who was trying to sell hers on behalf of a relative. She private messaged me and said she works for the company who supply these tickets, and that Alton Towers regularly check eBay for people trying to sell tickets on (hence why she was selling on FB). She said they cancel the tickets from the barcode number on display in the photo. I decided against buying them, and the Chessington ones that were also for sale from someone else. there's no way I'm going all that way with kids, only to be refused entry.
#30
Or how about dont sell tickets you didnt even pay for. Cant go swap them or give them away. Scalping should be illegal whatever the event
#31
if you buy tickets on eBay ensure set the bar codes are hidden has Alton Towers are checking on tickets online that is how they are cancelling tickets
#32
I bought some on eBay without the serial numbers showing, but the date on the ticket was September 2015. eBay seller told me the tickets had been re coded and they will work on any date.
got to the turnstiles, a guy checked the ticket after it was scanned, and said you can't use this ticket today, I told him I paid for them and he said he had to confiscate all the tickets as it was illegal to buy them., he kept the one I scanned, but I walked away and not hand over the tickets. wasted day out :(

I assume you're requesting a refund from the seller...? Tickets recoded - new one on me! The only ones that were opened up to use on any date were the ones dated during the park closure following the smiler accident.
