Help needed with internet/ new phone line

I've just moved into a new flat which I don't think has a phone line anywhere, I couldn't find a bt box earlier. Now I want the internet mainly and because I'm an orange mobile customer can get a decent Orange max package for £15 with them which includes no BT line rental. Now who will sort me out the line to start with BT or will Orange set it up somehow? If I ring BT and ask them to set it up I know I'll probably be charged a £100 or so but will they only set it up if I tie into a contract with them or will the set it up and let me go straight with orange?

i had the same problem with my flat.. i had to pay the £120+ fee for a new phone line which i transferred to sky immediately.. so i dont see any problem if you call BT for a phone line and change to Orange.. alternatively, you can go for the orange USB mobile broadband if you dont want to pay for the phone line.. but that means its got a 3GB max use as well as it can only be used on one PC/Laptop..

If you live there via renting, perhaps you can contact your landlord and ask him/her to pay for the new phone line.. hope this helps.. :)

Do you need the phone line?
Are you in a cable area?

I only ask because cable provide broadband for a similar price and you don't have to have a phone line. I live quite a distance from my local BT exchange and therefore found orange broadband signal to be very intermittent (I'm sure this would be the same for any ADSL broadband)

However since I've joined Virgin, i get great speed and have no connectivity issues. just a thought

I really want it for gaming and because I have sky player on my laptop so I can watch it at good speed on that. Might be worth seeing if the landlord will pay for the phone line I suppose, don't ask don't get and all that. As long as they don't mind setting the line up then letting me immediately jump ship to Orange I'm not fussed 8MB for 15 quid and no extra line rental seems good. Plus I'll have sky sports 1,2 and 3 on a decent broadband speed.

What's more cost effective setting up the line and having £15 for 8MB or going cable, isn't that a touch more pricey for less?

Cable 2 meg broadband + phone line =
£20 set up fee
£15.50 a month (x12)
£25 credit onto first bill
total £181

Cable 10 meg broadband + phone line =
£20 set up fee
6 months at £19
6 months at £27
£25 credit on first bill
total £271

Orange
BT line connection £122.33 (however, according to the web site, not everyone is charged this
12 months at £15
Total £302.33

There are other options available and don't forget quidco

I think the biggest factor should be how far from the BT exchange you are and what your download speed will be

I am sure i saw a thread for BT to install a new line for free
but cant find the thread for it
i think you had to phone a 0800 number but take out 1 year contract to get it
somebody hopefully will find the thread 4 you

I'll look into cable then I suppose. I'm in Leeds so imagine I'll get a good download speed I'll have a browse online and see if there's anything to tell me what it will be like.

Do you know if Broadband L is fast enough for PS3 gaming and would be quick enough to stream Sky Player well?

Seems a good one to go for.

Scrap that seems that to even use Virgin I'd need a BT line only comes through under national broadband which needs an original line, so going with Orange is easier.

I agree, no point if you need BT line,
