ok so i bought a phone (w910i) from ebay (ino ino) at christmas which worked fine until the day we came back from america (24th june) when we took it to cpw at the start they told us that the phone needed updated software so i tried that no luck then went back to cpw yesterday and they told me the phone has been blacklisted.

So phoned orange last night regarding the phone and was told they could tell me when the phone was blocked if i provided imei number which i did this morning only to be told infact they couldnt tell me exactly when and why it was blocked but started going on about using a different sim card in the phone and so that the user wasnt being run up a bill (doesnt make sense to me seeing as we are using my frined pay monthly sim in it so paying our own bills)

Now i would like to here what you think..personally i think insurance job/fraud

what would you do now?

I think you have hit the nail on the head there, but why have they waited so long? To make it look more plausible? But in the period since you bought it the phone will have taken a big price drop, unless they sold the phone with no intention of doing this then found themselves in a tight spot, have you tried contacting the seller? See what they say.

This is the reason I would not buy a decent mobile second hand except for from a trusted source.

its why have they waited so long that confuses me. The phone has dropped over £200 in price (shop prices)since i bought.

Im waiting their reply, how long would you wait before taking it further?

Lesson learned about buying from ebay
#3
Probably so cant put a dispute in PayPal? As been so long and say its your own fault? Its been blocked as in other countries they work, thats why it dont work here! Got nothing to do with using different Sim cards!!

Hope you get it sorted!!

well im to go to the orange shop this morning to see about it more

what kind of evidence would i need to prove that i bought it?

I have the box/accessories (imei number is on bottom of box) and i have paypal receipt and bank details of payment

Yea take all them details in with you and hopefully the buyre is the person who took the contract out and they will be able to look it up and know that you have not stolen it and is legally yours!! The PP reciept does have the name and address of the person on it?
#6
it has the name and email address of the person on it but no address

Take it in and see what they say? Contact eBay and see if you can get any details or any buyers/sellers who have used the same person as you who may have details? When it comes to blocked phones its a headache!!
#8
The problem more then likely is the person using who had the phone got it with a contract and maybe this month they didnt pay there bills so orange block the contract and phone. Try another sim inside it and it should work also try contacting the seller.
#9
also yes on ebay you can request a ebayers information on address and phone number but they get yours inreturn too cant remember where the page is though.
#10
i remember this happening to someone i know they didnt pay there bill in time so the contract was stopped and so the phone got blocked too.
#11
no sims work in it i have tried 3 different sims in the phone
#12
Best bet is trying to contact the seller.
#13
ive done that so guess its a wait and see game :x
#14
phones in the uk do not get blocked for non bill payment as the contract is on the sim and not the phone its self, look @ it this way you dont pay your bill they block the sim and phone it would be a catch 22 as you cant pay for something you can no longer use and how could they chase you for say your full 12 month contract debt if you are no longer using there service due to a blocked phone/sim
#15
ok so its not blocked because of non-payment.

Im still going with scam for my options and i reckon if i dont hear anything by the middle of next week i mite just have a word with my police mate to see if they would help at all
#16
my geuss would be its been reported lost or stolen for what reason i dont no, one thing do for orange to say they could tell you then change there mind. it may be that the person got this phone on contract and have noticed they have there sim being used in the uk and the phone in america and for there safetly blocked the handset a very long shot i no, but the one that sticks in my mind would be a insurance scam or reporting the handset/lost or stolen (why wait so long do) a long shot i no but have u tried putting a orange sim in a re-selecting the network maybe where you have been in the usa for a while it messed up the network setting's, have orange confirmed 100% its been blocked
#17
cpw confirmed it was blocked and phoned orange who said yes it had been blocked.

im about to go to orange now to see if this cant be sorted
#18
i would be suprised if they sort it, i have only ever seen phones unblocked if it was done by mistake or was a phone reported lost which was then found best bet would be the police as i cant see the network will be much help as there is only so much info that by law they will be able to tell you

good luck.

I'm thinking that the original seller of the phone lost his simcard and reported it lost/stolen. The thing is, I'm pretty sure that Orange automatically block the phone that the simcard is registered to as well as deactivating the simcard. This is also why Orange usually say that you can't unlock one of their phones unless it has been registered with them for a certain period of time. You'll need to speak to Orange, but I'm almost certain that you'll get nowhere and should put this one down as a lesson learned (i.e. be very careful where you buy a 2nd and phone from).

I think that's a good bet, unfortunately as far as I'm aware it's intentionally difficult to get the procedure reversed.

Orange do, or did at least.
I've also known T-Mobile pgone's get barred for the same reason.

The OP will be VERY lucky to get it working again unless they registered a change of ownership with Orange, and due to Data Protection laws I'll be amazed if Orange tell them anything at all apart from contact the person you bought it from.
#26
yea most networks used to but they no longer bar the phone for non bill payment an easy way to show this would be for the op to get his handset unlocked and test another networks sim, as the database the networks share are for stolen/lost phones only and back in the day when they used to block phones for non bill payment you would end up with a handset that worked on all networks bar the one it was blocked on
#27
It could also just be a coincidence, and that someone has given the incorrect IMEI number to Orange for their phone, which has led to them blocking your phone.
#28
dub oange do block phone for non payment of bills - there response was why should they use our phones if they dont pay the bills.

orange in the shop are useless, as are orange on the phone, they tell you one thing and then wont tell you when you have all the info needed.

Last nite they said if i rang with imei they would tell me why it had been cancelled, now all of a sudden they cant which means i dont know how to proceed
#29
if i were to get this phone unlocked, as orange themselves suggested i go do would the phone work on other networks?

If it is black listed then it will be blocked, and as i'm sure you were going yto point out, it is illegal to unBLOCK a phone :)
#32
its blocked.

shows how much orange know lol

If the phone is simply sim-locked to Orange, then it would be possible that it might work if it is unlocked to all networks.

On the other hand, if the phone has been blacklisted, then even if you do get the phone unlocked, it'll still not work on any UK network as they share locked handet (IMEI) numbers. The only way it'll still work is in another country as phone networks don't share this information out with other countries(yet).

You have a bit of a dilemma here, unless you can get the phone unlocked for very cheap or free, then you may as well not bother.

But possible........

Try getting Orange to unblock it, if not, you've paid for it so why lose out, get the imei changed.........
#35
ok i spoke to my friend in CPW and she said if the phone is lost or stolen it can be blocked and made worthless by all networks with in 48/78 hours of it being reported, she also said she has never seen anyone who has had there phones blocked due to non bill payment (even her boss said the same) he said he was always told that that was an old rule and that they had stopped doing that as they would rather either try get you to pay your bill or send it to a debt agency (as by blocking/suspending the services they cant charge you for what you are not using) her advice was to go find out why orange have allowed it to be blocked on all networks rather then just on orange as the database shared between the uk networks is for lost and stolen handsets only, this could be why orange send unlock the phone
#36
ok well orange havent said for def the reason they just wont tell me more than its blacklisted

dont think i want to change imei would rather loss the money
#37
have a look here maybe email them or ring them http://www.micaf.co.uk/new/micaf/home.asp?Page_Info=11 i did try calling and got no answer :)
#38
dont change the imei m8 aint worth it in the long run, get caught doing it and you could be in serious trouble

again if its true and they blocked it on all 4 networks due to non bill payment (i am sure they cant - and i am sure they no longer block phones due to non bill payment but i could be wrong) but anyway point them to this website where it mentions how all 5 networks share the details on stolen/lost handsets and only stolen/lost handsets http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/migrationtemp/1525042/Mobile-phone-companies-race-to-block-stolen-handsets.html
