Help! P-reg Mercedes C Class electrical problems

Been having all sorts of electrical issues with my dad's old Merc, here are just some of them:

* Smoke came out from centre console a few months ago, found the switches for the electric windows and mirrors melted. Managed to find a 2nd hand console replacement from eBay, but side mirrors still not working.
* Battery keeps going flat if not driven for more than 1 day. I have recently replaced it with a new one as well.
* Interior lights stay permanently on, even while driving and yup, I have checked the on/off buttons.

I wish I could afford to change the car, but can't. Do you reckon it will cost a bit to get some one to look at the whole electrics? My worst fear is that the garage will fix the problems I report, but other problems will pop up and cost me more.

sounds like youve got some sort of drain happening somwhere......if the lights arent turning off thats 1 source do you have electric seats or any other modules that could be permanently turned on?

ring a few electrical automotive engineers and ask them for a quote

sounds like you have problems with a control unit not switching off, this will be causing the battery to drain overnight. You need to do a voltage drop test to determine which one it is. Are the interior lights staying on overnight? Did you check the door switches to see if one is broken?

Thanks for the reply. I am absolutely clueless with cars. I'll have a look at the Yellow Pages for local electrical automotive engineers, do most garage have these in or is it a specialist job?

Rep+ and thanks.

Mmmm! It could be the light, funny thing is that the light does go off and comes back on again in rare occasions while driving. It maybe loose wiring or something.

As mentioned, I don't want to spend money to fix 1 problem then another pops up because we have not got to the root of the problem.

Anyway, thanks & rep+.

most garages would have them but you may find cheaper if you look for just an electrical engineer who hasnt done the mechanical side of things......if that makes sense........some will work from home

I'm no mechanic but doesn't it sound like you have a short somewhere?! Melting switches, burning smells and draining batteries. Electrical short.
