Hi everyone,

I work for Healthtex Synergy aka Synergy Healthcare and the bosses have said they are going to close the bristol factory where i work unless we can come up with ideas to save money. It is a laundry that mainly deals with hospital linen. With the hike in diesel, gas and electric prices it is now losing money every month instead of making a profit. We've been given 30 days to put foward ideas to keep the factory open, that 30 days is now 16. If anyone has any ideas i would really appreciate it.

I enjoy my job and i get great satisfaction out of the work that i do because it is for hospitals.

Thanks in advance for any help.

what about approaching hotels to do their laundry?

Mention to your boss about using old cooking oil as fuel for the vans instead of Diesel. There is loads of information on the internet regrding this. If you are collecting linen from Hospitals, they might be able to do a deal in regrds to supplying used cooking oil.

Hi, JezzaP thanks for your help. They have tried to get new contracts but have lost out to other laundry's one particular one being sunlight. The managers have also said that new contracts isn't going to help because they have tried that and failed. Most of the people i work with feel that the bosses have already made there minds up and are going to close anyway but i didn't want to sit back and not try anything.

Thanks donnydude. I'll check it out.

could the workers get together and buy the factory as a going concern, and then you could use the cooking oil idea.

Could the management not set up an online shop and sell graded 32" LCD's for £100? Then keep the money and dissappear. An absolute fortune to be made from that! http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/117996/musthave100-website-now-dissapeared/

Sorry cannot offer real help, its the sad state of the current financial times and I feel for you losing a job that you enjoy, working in a job you love and with people you class as friends is as important as wages.

This may be a stupid question but would it be possible to get government funding or possibly sponsors and use it as a public service?

Thanks harlzter, it is frustrating not being able to do anything.

I take it you use industrial washing machines?

If so just get the thermostats turned down slightly, even a couple of degree's will save money considering the usage they would get

the cooking oil idea is good.. infact some hotels will pay you to take their used oil. My uncle used to have a farm with australian pigs.. pretty fancy stuff. All the hotels used to pay him to dispose off waste hotel food. He used to hire a truck twice a week and feed the waste to his pigs.. never seen such big plumpy pigs.. long time back as well!!!

Hmm you could look at making a costing sheet. See what costs you the most. If its space, reduce it, if its people, make an effective shift rota. You might have to streamline things a bit. See how many people are not doing anything or are overstaffed. If they can be used for anything else where ther eis understaffing. For example, if there is work and turn around times are not good, make breaks shorter!!
For example, if an employee gets paid say £60 a day, the cost to company is more likely £100 per day.. if he works 8 hours a day, CTC (cost to comapny) is £12.4ph. If you take say 2hrs break including smokes and tea and lunch etc, then company loses £25 per employee per day. 50 employees, Company loses £1250 per day. Over 22 days, its close to £26,000, half the break.. and you save £13000 instantly :)

It all adds up!! :)
