Help please. Find all photos on my computer so I can save them all?

Hi
Over the last few days my very old computer has started to play up. We had been thinking of replacing it for some time so want to make sure i have all my photos.
Most recently most of my photos have been stored on a program called HP Image zone which came with my printer. However previous to that we had different cameras and i know of at least one set of photos which were not kept on this program. These will have pics of my two boys when they were very young so I would not want to loose them.
Is there a way of bringing every photo up on the computer regardless of how it was put into the computer. Over the years the files have been very muddled up mainly due to me not really understanding at that stage about folders and files. They still confuse me.
What i would like to do is find every photo on the computer and then be able to store it to an external drive i have. These in time may then be put on my new computer when i get it. I have never backed anything up which really is stupid I know but just starting to get to understand it all.
Thank you for any help you can give. Sorry i am so untechnical, hope you get what i mean.

some one might say otherwise but put jpg in the search box of your computer & it should bring up every photo on the pc.

Go to the "Find Files" command in your Windows start menu and open it up. Where the computer asks for file text, type in a digital image extension like .jpg. Then click search, sit back and let your computer find image files for you.

If it's Windows then just search for the type of file. So if they're jpegs then type .jpg into the search box and hit enter, if they're bitmaps type .bmp and so on. Should bring up every photo of that file type on your computer. Try:
.jpg
.bmp
.gif
.tif
.png
--- they're the most common file types.

I will do a search for image files. Although it will also show any icons/images stored when you saved any web pages but I think that won't be a big issue.
Your search will show you all image files and you can copy them on to the external hard drive.
Hope this makes some sense (that's all I suggest) although there are lot more technical people on this web site than me.

^^^ What they said.

AND BACK UP! I've been burned before by not backing up data, and when you lose something (in my case, a lot of things) there's no getting it back.

google picassa might find them all for you. That's what I'm using now. My very old computer was so near it's limit it died, we couldn't even open a page. Panic. But my husband borrowed a cradle (?) from a bloke at work and bought an external hard drive and copied everything from the old hard drive.
