Not sure what you meant really rappy. I managed to get a blank desktop by selecting windows classic but the fonts have gone a little different.
It's ok though, I just prefer a totally blank desktop.

another way would be to find your desktop resolution and create a new picture and fill it with a solid colour. Then save as background... simples

STEP 1 : Open control panel, click change desktop background
