Tried to play a dvd on this tonight cos TV isnt set up to play the dvd player yet - (Thats a hanspree and the dvd and sky is set up the same as on the old tv but I cant seem to get the dvd to show up - if anyone knows what I should be doing then please tell me)
- right back to the laptop - says there is no dvd set up on the machine - realplayer says it needs to download new software - then it says I must have dvd software installed on my pc to be able to play dvds and to make sure the software that came with the pc is installed properly.
I cant find the discs and assume i'm prob looking for a driver??? Can anyone point me in the right direction for this???
Windows media player says it cant play the disc as a compatible dvd decoder isnt installed
I just need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks in advance

You need software which includes a dvd decoder. the drives usually come with either windvd or powerdvd. windows media player will play a dvd but microsoft didn't want to have to pay the license to give everyone a decoder hence why you have to have another player installed first. you don't need drivers tho.

You can play DVDs for free tho with VLC media player.

Eh? I have no problems playing DVDs on machines with only WMP installed...

To the op: To check that your DVD drive has a driver, right click on My Computer > Manage. Go down to Device Manager. Now, if your DVD drive is installed, you should be able to expand DVD/CD-Rom Drives and see the drive there. If not, it will appear with a yellow marker beside it as an unknown device - Meaning you will need to find the driver, although I doubt it especially if you're running XP.

Make sure your WMP is up to date for a start, download the latest version/updates:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=

Also, check that the DVD drive is working correctly - Stick a music or data CD in or something to see if it reads it. Now, you may need to enter media player, go to Now Playing and select the dropdown menu, and pick your DVD. Hopefully by now it should play.

If not, let me know and I'll think about it, it's 5.15 AM, too early to think more!

Nope - have done all the above and it still says there is no compatible dvd decoder installed on my computer
Does play a music cd!

On a brighter note - I have now got my sons dvd player and plugged it in to the new tv and that is playing dvds - so the next step with that is to find out why the other one doesnt work!

What a flamin nightmare

Can you post a screenshot of the error message? Or type it in word for word?

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

windows xp does not come with a dvd decoder as standard (MCE does i believe) so it is down to getting one installed, luckily there are free ones available try here, download a pack(i use k-lite) and install then use your software of choice, look up www.team-mediaportal.com

or play them thru dvdshrink/preview not perfect and but does work when you do not really want to mess on installing codec over codec.
