You could defragment it and try disk cleanup.

Start > all programs > accessories > system tools

This can be dangerous if you dont know what you are doing so attempt with caution or ask some one who is computer savvy.
you could always purchase a portable hard drive and move your photos, music and documents onto that to free up some disc space, this would be the best way of freeing up space. I agree with emasu you should defrag but I doubt that this will give you much free space back, its more likely to speed up your pc/laptop. hope this helps

You could do a search of all the files on C drive (search for *) and then arrange the view by size of the files. At the top of the screen the largest files will be displayed (ie: 500mb videos) and at the bottom the smallest files.

There may even be duplicate files...you can get a duplicate cleaner.

Also look at removing unwanted programs (add/remove programs)

Empty your trash bin too.

Ooo it now says there is 5.39 free lol

Wait till it gets to 10mb free and then worry

You can always search for files over a certain size - say - 50MB - then arrange them in size order once search iscomplete and see if there are any duplicates if you dont want to look around for a dup cleaner, then delete any you know about which are same size which you know what they are and which you dont need two of. best thing to do though is to get an external drive and keep most of your files on it, or copy pics etc onto DVd - with the amount of files people keep on computers nowadays your C drive isnt that big.....I guess you only have the one hard drive on your machine, or do you have any others - D or E that are not DVD drives - could be that you do and are storing stuff on C instead of another drive because an application is defaulting to store stuff on the C drive.....

ok enough of the complicated options.

Do the following.

Step 1

As already said, go to the control panel then in to add/remove programs.

Now go down the list and remove anything you dont use. If you are not 100% sure what the program is then just dont uninstall that one. If you know what it is but dont use it, get rid.

Step 2

Download CleanUP! and install it, start the program but dont run a scan straight away. Instead click the options button, and untick the box that says Delete Cookies. Click ok to the options.

Close any browsers you have open and then click cleanUp and say no to the message about a simulated run.

This will clear out all temp files on your PC.
