Im currently on 2.76 firmware and cannot connect to the internet. Im using a Livebox ea40 router, connecting via ethernet cables (home plugs). I keep trying to connect but the connection test on the ps3 says 'obtain ip address failed' I have tried re setting the router and renewing ip address etc but still wont connect....

... Any ideas?

Can you give it a manual IP address?
#2
yeah i can but usually beacuse its wired connection it just always auto detects the settings. At the moment the ip address says next to it (private networks only) so obviously this is the reason for not connecting. What would i use to assign an ip address manually?

I'm assuming you are getting a 169.xxxx address, which is what happens when DHCP isn't working.

You should be able to set it all manually somewhere in the PS3... I don't have one so can't tell you where it is,
but it should be pretty clearly labelled.

has this setup ever worked?

Take it back and get a proper online gaming machine like the Xbox360.

Are you getting any DNS errors, if you are then try the following as it sorted mine out a while back

Ok, I've been scouring the internet trying to find a solution to this problem, and here's what I found (it worked for me, I'm hoping it works for you too.)

First some info, my PS3 stopped connecting to the internet following my 2.41 upgrade, not sure if that's connected or note. I'm in a wired condo building, so I have no access to a modem to reboot or anything else, so I needed to find a solution that didn't require access to a modem.

I found this on Yahoo Answers: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...8082255AAYWWiw

It's a little out of date (the guy suggests upgrading to 1.50) but I adapted it to work now, so here's what I did.

1. Go into Network Settings/Internet Connection Settings on your XMB

2. Select in order the following: Custom, Wired (I'm guessing it'll work for wireless too) Manual Settings, Auto-Detect, Manual...that should bring you to a page with a bunch of numbers on it in the xxx.xxx.x.x look.

3. Go to your computer, run a DOS command prompt window and type ipconfig/all...that should bring you up a list of numbers and stuff, most of which you don't need.

4. The ones you need are IP Address and DNS Servers. Write both numbers down.

5. Back to the PS3, in IP address, put in the exact same number as your comupter uses, but add 1 to the last digit. So if you have 123.456.7.890 on the computer, then in the PS3 one, type 123.456.7.891

6. PS3 - don't touch the subnet, put the DNS server number from your computer into both the Default Router and Primary DNS spots on the PS3, leave the Secondary DNS at 0.0.0.0

7. Continue along the Network Settings, the next menu is MTU - just choose automatic, Proxy Server - Do Not Use, UPnP - enable, that will take you to a summary page, press X, and then select Test Connection. I then get Succeeded for everything and I'm back online.

8. Enjoy the internet.

thats pretty funny..

but seriously

1)Is the PS3 set to wired connection in the settings?
2)Are u using a crossover cable (as opposed to a patch cable) as I know this was an issue with Ps2 connectivity, I only used wireless myself..?
3)Sometimes the NAT settings can be a problem.. u'll ave to investigate your router for that?

yep just never works when it goes to private network...normally just reset the router if this is the case but doesnt work on this occasion.

Defo not my own guide mate, found it on the net after hours of reading pages on the internet regarding DNS errors I came accross this one and was the only guide that sorted my problem.

I kept getting a dropped connection and sometimes could not even get on the internet for about 2 weeks and was getting on my nerves. Since I used the guide and pointed my DNS away from my router and pointed it to a public DNS I have had no problems with the internet connection
