Could any of you very clever people help me please??!

A friend has a Compaq PRESARIO F700 which was bought around July 2008. A couple of months ago, the screeen froze whilst using it, and after forcing the shutdown, it now won't boot up again. The blue light comes on but the screen is black. I have pressed all the buttons, F2 etc and nothing works.

Any ideas?!?!?! Or has it had it's day? :-(

[FONT=Verdana]You tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor?

Also do you hear the hard disk starting up at all but also have you tried powering up the laptop with it's battery removed?

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Don't suppose it came with a recovery disc, or did your friend make one?

If so it should boot from the disc.

Otherwise, can you not press F8 and get into the advance options? If so, you might be able to start the computer in safe mode

F8 on both my desktop and lappy (via Fn key) allow me to restore the Vista OS from an on-board image. If you can access a recovery menu via F8, perhaps you can do this too?

I do have a spare monitor, but it's at home, will have to try that later. I'm not sure if it's booting up or not, it makes a sound when turning on, like the fan coming on, but then is quiet again. I've tried the battery out, but no luck with that.

Thanks for your reply, I'll try the external monitor thing when I can and let you know!

Thanks for replying, It's not looking good for a recovery disk unfortunately, can they be purchased at all?? F8 not working either :-(

Unfortunately F8 still showing a black screen. Thanks for replying.

Hopefully the external monitor may show something

My laptop did this a couple of months ago, it sounded like it was starting up, took a wee minute then shut down again, turns out I needed a new HD, luckily I have insurance so they replaced and re-installed windows for me.

Yes you can purchase recovery discs. You will have to contact the laptop manufacturer with your model number.

I assume the machine is running Vista based on the date you gave?

If so, do you or a friend have a copy of Vista on disc? If so, you could possibly boot up from that or use it to repair system errors?

Good luck with the monitor idea!
