Help required for upcoming holiday - sat nav

My brother is going on holiday to thailand and asked me about sat nav possibilities there and i in turn came here to ask if tomtom or any other company provides sat nav in thailand.

I know tomtom do maps for different countries but there doesnt seem to be one for thailand. Also would it be better to get sat nav on a phone (ie tomtom navigator) as although he will rent a car out he will be doing a lot of walking he says and i have never experienced sat nav on a phone

we have just come back from a holiday in Malta and had no sat nav and got lost quite a bit. Malta is a small island and we were able to get back on track quite easily as the locals can speak english and he doesnt need sat nav for his holiday to pakistan as hes been there before and its his place of birth. Thailand however is a completely different story and he thinks sat nav is needed.

What do you recommend and what choices are there?

P.s Before you ask me why hes having three holidays in the space of three months, he says he has been working seven days a week for 8 months straight

Dump technology, the best satnav you can have is the locals knowledge & not a little box telling you to drive across that fast flowing river ;)

Thats what i thought but he insists that because he doesnt know the language that he cant use public transport

what is the public transport like and how easy is it to use for someone new to the country without knowing the language?

well seeing that Thailand has millions of tourists every year your brother won't be the only one. its not as if he's going to afghanistan
You can get anywhere where you want to in Thailand via the public transport system or taxis.
Trust me unless you drive like a Thai the roads and other drivers are quite dangerous.
i learned to drive over here and you have to be a very selfish driver really to get anywhere.
potholes everywhere, no road markings, new/ roads being rebuilt all the time the sat nav will need updating every day the way things are over here.
a taxi journey cost say about 1 hour in the car is equivalent to a taxi journey from my house to the train station in the same time about 5 mins away.
over night bus journeys say from bangkok to the islands are costing about 4 quid.
Tuk tuks say if he wants to get round bangkok are about quid fifty and if he wants to get the bus same would cost 10-20p.
everyone kinda does the toutisty route over here so he'll never be alone(unless of course he wants to head up to the golden triangle and meet some warlord or drug king
