which version of ubuntu?

If its a recent version, most of the time it detects them ok and network manager prompts to configure, run the following with the modem plugged in

lsmod | grep option

Normally they use the option driver to operate and create some USB Serial interfaces in /dev/ttyUSB0, 1, 2 for operation.

Another thing to try is running tail -f /var/log/syslog in a terminal window BEFORE you plug in the modem and watch for the detection routines
