You need to drain the fuel tank............ring the AA if you are a member or if not there are specialist people that do it. :)

What ever don't turn the ignition on, they should be able to sort it.
#4
How much fuel is in your tank in total
#5
Very little, I was on the red and he put a fivers worth in on the way home, then drove it about 5 miles or so. One of his mates said to fill it up with unleaded and it should dilute the diesel but I'm not so sure

From the AA web site (note the last sentence, I think you are OK as long as you top up with Pertrol to dilute the Diesel, although you have already driven it - WHY!).

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuels-and-environment/misfuelling.html

Diesel in Petrol car

Do not turn on the ignition or start the car

This is much less common because the standard diesel nozzle at fuel stations is larger than the fuel filler neck on modern petrol cars – you have to be pretty determined and patient to misfuel with diesel as a result.

If the car's still under warranty you should check with the franchised dealer regarding their advice and correct remedial action.

Generally a small amount of incorrect fuel should not damage the engine as long as you have not started the car top up fully with petrol.

If you've added more than 10% (5 litres in a 50 litre tank) diesel – the car shouldn't be run and the tank should be drained

If you've added less than 10% (5 litres in a 50 litre tank) diesel – the tank can be topped up with petrol and the car run normally unless the manufacturer has advised otherwise

Depends on the car.....some fuel tanks with a swirl pot will mix the fuel with not too much harm but it's not recommended. It's best to get it all drained out as the likelihood is it will kill your engine.

Then your cheapest and easiest answer is to just fill it with petrol it will all mix in and you will be fine

This is not as bigger deal as you might think obviously if you can syphon out the diesel it will be better but if you cant just fill it with petrol the ratio of diesel to petrol will be hardly anything i think it will be fine
#9
if you've already started it then fill it up with petrol
#10
no....for you will surely know when you truly have been b'd

although what I would say is you will prob need to get the car fuel system drained and cleaned out before it does any permanent damage :)

Thanks All, I've let him fill it up with petrol now, and after it having a hissy fit for a while, it seems to be running ok for now!

You know it makes sense

its much worse to put petrol into a diesel car , if it were me i would fill the tank up and run it as 4 ltrs is not much.]
#14
Diesel in a petrol car and that small amount isnt that big an issue just fill it right up with petrol, NOW if it was petrol in a diesel then you'd have problems, modern diesel engines dont take too kindly to have the wrong fuel in them.

we must have at least 1 diesel a week dragged into the workshop that has been filled with petrol & run.

gawn admit it wasnt your hubby was it :p
#15
you need to top it up with unleaded to dilute the diesel but you need to make sure you keep the tank topped up for a while so that all of it burns away... if it's only a fivers worth and you were on empty this should be fine
#16
Gosh Gemma what on earth was he thinking. He must have a diesel of his own?

Hope your car works okay, I'd play it safe and have them come out and drain it anyway xx
#17
As Gemz says - fill up and you'll be fine
Will smoke a bit though
