Help..unable to access drives & data on my external hard drive

Hi,

The external hard drive lights up and is viewable from the "safely remove hardware" icon but the drives are no longer available and I really need some of the data as I do not have a backup elsewhere on one set of files.

I have tried to view the drives from windows explorer and disk management but they are not appearing, usb appears to be working fine and I have tried this hard drive on different machines as well.

Can anyone suggest how I can recover my data?

Thanks,
G

Its an 2.5" ION GHD225U80. I've also logged the problem with support at www.iogear.com

Unfortunately I cant anything that is similar to your problem nor do there seem to be any firmware updates.

With you trying it on another it rules out a config or USB problem on your machine, so it is definitely a drive issue.

I would say you are on the best course of action by contacting IOgear for tech help simply because the drive is as good as useless and no amount of doing anything with the PC is going to help :(

I had a similar problem with my barely used external drive. Both USB connections on the drive failed and scream 'low power' no matter what machine I connect the drive to. I did eventually manage to access the drive via Firewire.

My original concern was that the MBR (Master Boot Record) had been corrupted, which sounds like a possibility in your case. I will try and track down the thread where we discussed recovering my data.

There's a few suggested programs on that topic.

Thanks for your response. It has just the one usb connection so external power or firewire would not be an option, however I suppose I could try dual powered usb cable and see if that makes a difference. Would power be the problem even if it shows up as having being connected to the pc?

Thanks,
G

The main set of files I am trying to recover are html, css and images that I was working on and saving onto the external hard drive. As I did this work on my laptop which has windows vista would backup of these files be saved anyway else other than AppData folder?

Thanks,
G
