Help USB 2.0 on my puter seems to be running VERY slow

To cut along story short I had to move 500gb from an external hardive to my laptop and PC (divided between the two) and then back to a new external hdd. The data rate between the laptop and the HDD seemed to be alot quicker than it did with my desktop. I know my desktop is USB2.0 as is the laptop. Anyone give a reason as to why it appears to be running so slow? I just moved a 400MB video from my computer to a USB flash drive it took 12 mins, the same file from the laptop to the flash drive took just under 3. Why? I've googled and asked jeeves but get no sense from neither.
Cheers Paddy

Depends on the specs of the computer, and what other processes are running. A computer with a lower CPU speed, or a lesser amount of RAM will take longer. And if more processes are running these are taking up the CPU and RAM as well.

It's a pentium 4 3.2ghz, with 2gig of ram, the lap top is a AMD turion 2.0ghz with 2 gig ram. I'm moving 110gb at the moment and it reckons it's gonna take about 110mins. I've just updated loads of drivers, so could that of made a difference

If there is lots of hard drive usage, it'll take longer, as the drive is being split between tasks and having to spin more. Thats all I can think of for now.

And 110Gb is a lot, so a gig a minute isn't too bad.
