Buying another modem won't work as the modem has to be synced up to virgin.

Could just be the router blocking ports (assuming your going through this)

no, as the modem is most likely stolen.

you used to be able to hack them to get free broadband, but thats all but stopped now, hense being able to pick them up for a fiver now.

you'd be buying stolen property as the modems are rented not bought (your router if it came from Virgin, is yours to keep tho)

The modems are alrite, pre 50mb ones. Ambits and such. however the 50MB modem, is rented...

all virgin media modems are rented, only the router is yours to keep.
selling them is against the law, plus they won't work as VM won't sync them

As advised in this thread you're better off having VM sort the router out themselves, at no cost to yourself.

I moved out of a cable area around 2 years ago, but then modem cloning was easily done. I could clone my little blue modem and use a Motorola SurfBoard instead (I wasn't too keen on those little blue things they sent out). It was just a case of copying a few settings from the blue modem. Not sure if this can still be done, but I don't see why not.

it probs can still be done but it goes against the T&C of your virgin contract and they'll boot you off if they find out, possibly take legal action against you if they can trace a modem thats been sold to you.
as it would come under receiving stolen goods.

it can't be done now (well not easily) as they have enabled bpi, extra security checks for macs appearing more than once and a fair bit of other security.

not all virgin modems sold are stolen though.

Well when my first 12 month period finished, they never once asked for the Ambit back. When a guy come to install teh 50MB BB, he said that virgin will want the modem back once finished with...
    slackrat77
sometimes if they've stopped using a certain modem they may not want it back, but its still not yours to sell, you can dispose of it appropriately but you cant sell it, cos its not yours to sell, and it won't work on anyone's system (hence you being able to dispose of it).

if its still current, they probs will retrieve it

    er...technically they are.
they're never the property of the customer, therefore selling them is against the law.
just cos they dont request it back, doesnt mean you can sell it, cos unless modded, it won't be synced by VM at their end.

in the early days, Telewest did allow you to use your own choice of modem, but that stopped quickly, as some people chose to use ones with USB connections instead of the supplied LAN card and a modem.
since just about every new PC and laptop now comes with LAN onboard as standard, they've phased out using ones with just a USB connection or allowing customers to use their own purchased one.

when they send a new modem out they tell you to dispose of the old one as you wish, the guy actually said to me I would get a tenner from a boot sale.
    slackrat77
am sure virgin media would like to know that!
they won't work unless modded, so theres no point in selling them, its just encouraging piracy
