best thing to do is start off checking out safety reports as to which one came out top, maybe someone has a which subscription that could help you out with that, then you need to look at what your budget can stretch to. that will narrow it down to a few anyway, then you need to see which one fits your car best. After that you google for the best price. Best brands will always be britax and maxi cosi.

Good advice

You can register for a 1 month trial of Which for £1 - read the reviews and then cancel.......Britax Evolva used to do well in the tests but that was 3/4 years ago when I last looked. However not all Britax seats are recommended - one was a don't buy.

Price isn't necessarily an indicator of safety.

PS don't go for ones which win Mother & Baby awards etc as these awards have nothing to do with safety. The Britax chair Which was saying was unsafe had been recommended by Mother & Baby......

.

fab didnt know it was only £1, and definatley agree with the price thing, some of the most expensive ones just dont do very well in an actual crash, think it was one of the new ones that lay flat for newborn babies was someting stupid like £500 and it didnt perform very well:?

best one is go to asda you get a britax child seat where you can extend the back up and down tilt it or take the back off for 25pound and it quite thin and light really good seat

we have the graco one for my daughter it was £90 when i bought it a while back now tho, and its been excellent lasted really well and the top part lifts so as she grows no need to replace the seat id defo recomend it and now its 50% off even better

I'd only go with models that Which recommends - all brands Britax, Graco, Mamas etc have their lemons......

This is what Which said a couple of years ago

Ten inferior child car seats exposed by Which? in the past two years are still on sale.

Mamas & Papas supplies three of the poorest - the Navetta Carry Cot, the Elan and the Passaggio - while Britax manufactures three - Cruiser Plus, Ranger and Trio. The others to avoid are Concord Trimax X-Line, Meggy Kombi, Storchenmühle Starlight SP and Graco Junior Plus.

These seats all meet current minimum legal standards but under Which's more stringent tests, were found either to offer inadequate protection in a severe crash, or are difficult to install, which increases the risk of injury in an accident. They are better than no seat at all, but if possible buy a safer seat as soon as you can.

To meet the standard, seats must withstand a 30mph crash, without a child sustaining serious injury. Which? uses EuroNCAP crash test conditions, with a front-crash test at about 40mph and also a side-impact test.

Which editor Malcolm Coles says:

'We're very disappointed that some of the seats we exposed as inadequate as long as two years ago are still on sale.

We think simply making child car seats safe enough to pass the minimum safety test is downright irresponsible.

We asked the manufacturers why they still sell these inferior seats, but some just hid behind the regulations, while others failed to answer our questions.'

The chances of an accident or side impact is small but it happens and I know someone it happened to with dreadful results. If you have side impact curtains this will help reduce the risk but otherwise go for the safest one you can....
