Help! webspace Nasty Xmas Surprise

Need some advice

I brought a years webspace about 5/6 years ago when I was at university, to put my cv on line. I took out a 1 years contract out for about £30.00 with start and finish dates. When that 1 year was up I did not renew my contract, so did not pay upfront for the second year. I have just received a invoice for NEXT year 2010.

This puzzled me as I only took out a years contact 5/6 years ago. I logged on my account and got a nasty surprise £162.00. They have been charging me every year since. I am not happy, why have they let the contract to continue with non payment? Marking each year as unpaid, 5 years in a row?

Do I have the right to refuse payment. As the contract I took out was only for 1 year?

Although the contract was a year they have presumably been keeping the webspace for you for the last 5 years. I can only imagine you were on a rolling contract ie like mobile phone and you just get billed pro rata. I take it you have never physically cancelled. Have you not received the annual bills before. How did this years bill get through?

I'm suprised they never cancelled it after payment non-recieved.

Which company is it?

If you didnt physically request cancellation you will need to pay them the money.

This was a new company when I signed for the year. I had a email when my web address run out. I had a email for the price of the second year, but that was it. Did not physically cancel, no option to do that on there website. It was a years contract and stated it was from 2004 to 2005, I did'nt think I had to phone up and cancel it as well.

Usually it rolls on month by month after the contract is expired.

I think you'll have to pay unless as an 'act of goodwill' they will waive it.

have you used the site in that time? I mean to log in, update. hosting type things? if you haven't then I don't see how they can argue. If your site has basically sat dormant for 4 years, other than passing traffic, I'm sure you can get them to waive the bill.

You could say that about any type of contract though.

Fact is it wasn't physically cancelled.

I personally agree with you though.

Should have no traffic as the web address expired in the first 2 years.

Read their t&c's and see what it says, if they won't budge then go see C&B as you have not used the service, they may be able to help you out of it.

Pay them nothing, zilch. If your contract was for 1 year and they never contacted you to ask if you wanted to re-new then that's their hard cheddar. Must admit that I would contact them and mention you've had no contact with them for the past 5/6 years so what's the score. But still don't pay them whatever you do. If you have been getting credit etc since then then there can't be any bad credit rating for you, surely? Also, are they a UK company registered at Companies House? If not then once again, DON'T PAY THEM A BEAN!

GOOD NEWS just got this email back:

Hello Shaun,

I have canceled your account now.

Kind regards,
Claudiu

Just checked my account again and all the invoices have been deleted shows £0.00 now.:-D but my account still seem to be open, I can still login. Which is a bit strange.

Well done velnet, Thankyou so much.
