i had a 1996 Mrk 3 VW Golf 1.6 that went on for 4 years with no probs, passed every MOT and was reliable and built well. Stay away from more common cars (meant in the occurance, not the drivers themselve ;-) ) as they will have high milage and probably lots wrong with them.

remember to look for a car that does as much mileage to the gallon as possible. with todays rising fuel costs it would be a brilliant idea.

dont buy from garage as £1500 wont get u much. should get a nice mondeo, astra for that price. its worth taking someone with u who knows abit about cars. look for cars worth more than £1500. most people price them higher then they willing to accept.

Citroen C5. You should be able to get a pretty good one for that money, or a Mondeo.

I've got two old Hondas, can't beat Japenese for reliability. watch out for ex mini cabs though!
1500 should get a decent Accord.

vauxhall are the most reliable cars I have ever had - wouldnt touch a ford again with a barge pole

thanks for all the advice, given me a lot of things to think about, think i will def get from a private seller, and will take a friend who knows about cars as I havent a clue

For a mid sized car I'd recommend either a Ford Focus which has been car of the year in on every continent or VW Golf, the cost of ownership for both models is reasonable with servicing and parts being reasonable also.

I agree, my last 1995 Accord went over 200,000 miles, I paid 550.00 for it 3 years ago.

I bought another 1995, on Ebay, with 100,00 miles, 6 months tax and mot, 4 brand new tyres, and in nearly mint condition, for 350.00 pounds.

I sold the old one for 300.00

Great cars, look around

i have had alot of cars due to a car mad husband, and for that price i think you cant go wrong with a ford or vauxhall, i would have alook on ebay if i was you, but if you buy one take someone who knows abouts cars with you when you pick it up so they can test drive it and to make sure nothing is wrong with it.
hope you find a good one .;-)

yeh, def. take a mechanic/knowledgeable friend, and get an hpi check (someone does them for a few quid now i think so worth it to prevent you getting ripped off...)
