HELP - Which game console?

My daughter (12yrs old) has asked for a games console for Christmas, she said she doesn't mind whether it's a Wii or Nintendo DS.

But on here I have seen a few people selling their Wii consoles in favour of a Xbox 360!

I don't play computer games (no time!) and don't want to spend a huge amount of money buying something if there is a better alternative.

Which console do you guys rate as the better one, graphics, game choice etc?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

(If I have posted this in the wrong place...sorry!)

I'd say DS as its portable...and as mentioned... free games

They're not really the same thing at all, it's like comparing a portable MP3 player to your Hi-Fi at home. That said, if forced to make the choice I'd say DS as it's cheaper, portable, more games etc. etc.

nintendo ds is your best bet i think. we have a ds and xbox 360 (which in my opinion is for older boys/girls) people are easily bored with the wii. she will love the DS- has hundreds of games to cater for different tastes

for family fun the wii hands down mario party ,smash bros and mario kart are great fun games and you can play your game cube games on it to ,xbox 360 good games but aimed more for teenagers adults but still the problem of red lights of death .ps3 true high def gameing wen through an lcd or plasma tv and a blu-ray player aswell games can be expensive sometimes.but you dont pay to go online like the xbox 360 .
my view is ps3 for looks on high def very close is 360 for hi def and games choice then the wii not hi def only 480p not 1080p but its your choice i have all 3 so i could not pin it down to 1 machine

Wii and 360 are good consoles, PS3 is still a bit pricey though.

Wii packages come in at around £160-£170 and is a great interactive games console for the user.

xBox360 packages kick in at around £129.99 and graphics are a lot better than Wii but I dont think its fair to compare them as they are both orientated to different audiences (Wii for Interactiveness and 360 for sitting on backside with a controller getting blue legs!)

If its for your daughter (ahmm...yeah right!) then I'd get the Wii to get her interacting with the games and exercising while shes enjoying the games, it'll soon tire her out and you'll get more peace and quiet..lol.

xBox360 can work out costly if she decides to play online gaming, £30-£35 for a yearly subscription, on the plus side theres plenty of games to choose from.

Same with Wii, you only get the one controller and the downside is that its ideal for a grouop of player but you can still play single player, again extra controllers can be costly.

Of course if its a portable console shes looking for then the DS would be ideal for her and be cheaper than the larger Wii and 360 packages.

Soley based on budget I'd go for the xbox360 arcade package at £129.99, you get one wireless controller, memory card, 5 XBLA games (mini arcarde games) and cables etc to get you started. It doesnt come with a HDMI cable but you can pick these up for around £3 delivered.

A point to note is that if shes only 12 then the good thing about the 360 is that it has parental control so she cant play online unless you enter a code and you can restrict the type of games she plays. Only mentioning this as some online gamers use profanity and cursive language.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

you have to buy an r4 card and downlaod the roms, illegal

It's only illegal if you don't own the games already....They're a very handy way of carrying around all your games without needing to take a ton of cartridges with you .....and personally I'd say CycloDS Evolution or similar blows away the R4, the R4's a bit old hat these days.

EDIT: Info here: http://www.cyclopsds.com/

Yh, i used R4 as an example, a 4gb card is massive. i only said it is illegal because the op thought "games for free", even if you buy the cartridge and download, its not free. Or just download and play as "demo" :)

Get a xbox 360 flash it with iextreme 1.4 and your ready to go.

agreed
without sounding sexist some of the best games on the xbox are boyish type stuff . unless shes a tomboy , dont think very suitable , on the other hand if she wants to join the army or likes fighting etc , xbox is superb

I think the xbox is far more geared toward adults than kids like ....

Ds is geared toward kids but i ended up taking the DS the other day when me car was being fixed and played fifa 08 on there to while the time away .

Wii is good from the aspect a lot of people have them however my son from liverpool got rid of his after 8 months .

DS is best bet i think

My OH has a 360 and the only thing that I play that isn't too boyish (shooting things and watching things blow up) is Viva Pinata, there are a few RPGs that aren't too bad but that's about it.
I love my DS far more, plus my nieces have them. A lot more choice of games and much cheaper.
The Wii is better enjoyed when you can play it with other people since that's what most of the games are all about.
My vote is for the DS.

I have a PS3 which I love, a DS which I play before going to bed, a PSP which needs a repair and a Wii that my wife plays... For a kid I would recommend the Wii, its great for all of the family, you will find yourself playing it as well, there are some very innovative games for it and its not a typical games console that will keep your daughter glued to the tv. It promotes exercise and is a very social games console, and at the risk of being dubbed sexist, it tends to appeal more to girls than say an Xbox 360 or PS3, both of my sisters have never been bothered about games consoles, but both have a Wii and so does my mum!!!

BTW free games are available on all three: Wii, Xbox, DS. Search google, far as I know safe but illegal.

I own Wii and my little sister has DS. Personally she gets fed up with Wii, she gets proper glued on to the DS though such that I took it away from her so she doesnt get too addicted. The Wii does promote excercise if you are bothered and interested, also I love my Wii but am definetly bored of it now (very few interesting games), Im into my bros PS3. DS wins the contest I guess: cheaper, good and wide selection of games (girls love final fantasy i think), and when they finally get bored of it (assuming nothings good forever) it wont matter too much as it was cheap.

Cheap and Cheerful.

For a girl of that age its gotta be a Wii or a DS, no question.

Forget the Xbox360 or PS3, thats boys and nerd chatter, lol

Personally a Wii, if she has friends round a lot. (Gets 'em off the couch too)

Or a DS if their friends have them too.

Hope it helps :)
