if you want james patterson you either pay for it or pirate it.

try manybooks.net, lots of free books there.

i also use the free sci-fi library at baen.com

Well I have just found out something interesting as a result of your post.
I don't make a habit of downloading masses but generally think of the internet as a huge library when all sorts of info can be accessed if you are prepared to search a bit. But it seems that ISPs or whoever are now taking steps to control us all. (I know its a fine line and some controls are good or necessary for the greater good).
If you search the term Project Guttenberg you will find an enormous range of books that have been uploaded. At some time in the past it was possible to download these books. All manner of books. That is now not possible. I guess it has something to do with copyright law in the UK.
Point I am making is if you do manage to access a site that gives you free downloads; do not assume you will be able to access it forever. It may be a matter of time before the 'internet police' restrict your access.
I am not setting out to encourage the law breakers or mass downloaders out there. Just stating a fact.

the price of downloads will only fall, it's just the same as happened with mp3 tracks.

as for your reader, you may be missing the point. you can carry dozens or hundreds of books. i have about twenty or thirty on my prs300 at any one time. i don't chop and change between them really but if i finish one i have a real choice about what to read next. plus, don't knock the classics, the reader has introduced me to a few very decent books that, to be honest, i wouldn't have read otherwise. plus you may get the chance to discover some new aspiring authors who may not get their early works published so you may get some really fresh new work.

give it a chance, i've had my reader about nine months and I still absolutly love it. probably charged it six or seven times in all that time and read loads of good books, a lot from authors i'd never previously heard of!
