help with a cat cartoon please, story ideas

To fill out my drawing portfolio I want to have a play with doing a comic strip aimed at children-early teens, and id like to animate it. Trouble is Im struggling coming up with a story, or a history to my main character. I want it to be funny, and something I could come back to and do other stories along the same lines (like a kids cartoon). I looked at whats on at the mo and its all characters saving the world, or teen school stuff.
my character is cat
so far my rubbish ideas have been:
cat can go forward and backwards in time, lives with a scientist I guess
iv tried making cat a robot
iv put stitches on his/her to look like a toy/teddy/zombie even

I would appreciate any ideas, im not a very good ideas person, im better at the visualizing part

Do a story about how it goes to magic school with its master, then you have the story line ready there just waiting to be plagiarised

well....everyone steals everything anyway.
I like the idea, funnily enough in messing around I have drawn my cat reading a spell book with a wand, wizards hat and couldron :)

erm no, iv asked for a storyline idea
generally speaking in this type of job one person comes up with the storyline idea and another person draws characters/animates, i would be the latter as im not an ideas person

but anyway this isnt a real job, its just a project for me, people ask me to draw out their ideas all the time, didnt see any harm in asking if people had ideas I could do, most people have ideas they cant visually realize, so thats all they ever stay, ideas in someones head

I draw for a living. To draw because people tell you to is lame.

The whole point about being creative is to....... be creative.

Have the idea, and draw it.

Im sure the illustrators who work for say disney think that, i read an illustrators blog recently who got asked to illustrate an idea that someone else had for a disney channel show, very lame! same with childrens book illustrators 2, im pretty sure they dont come up with the story idea

Just my opinion. This is your project isn't it? I'm creative because I can think of ideas and then draw/animate them.

If you can only draw someone else's ideas, you might as well be a cell painter in China.

I am creative, but not when I need to be, ideas come to me when I'm either in discussion or just randomly, and usually my ideas are very, erm singular I guess, like i can think of an idea for a single piece of art, or a poster(i do alot of graphic design), something that hasnt any continuity or depth. In this respect im struggling, iv drawn loads of positionals for my character, but it has no background and im at a loss and would like to get started tonight really as I have some time for once.

I can understand that, having being a graphic artist for near on 15 years.
Where can I see your work? Online profile?

I don't really have one, i still a student, doing graphic design final year, I hate it and feel like choosing a graphics degree was the worst thing i ever did, its really restricted me, I used to be pretty good at coming up with ideas, but now i feel i'm really boring and serious. i think thats why im finding it hard, i want it to be funny

Hell yeah to that!
I made the mistake of doing technical illustration and graphic design - how restrictive in teaching can you get? If you have any creative flair, it's beaten out of you and you have to 'conform'.

Problem is, when you actually get out in the real world, employees look for that flair (that you've just had beaten out of you for 3 years!).

If it's any consolation, I failed my degree simply because I refused to conform. Blake was a little more interesting to me that Saatchi ever was!
I started work at the end of a dryer in a tshirt printing company before getting the artwork junior position, then assistant manager, then manager, then I moved to the biggest promotional merchandise company in the UK (as artwork manager) where we did Hanna Barbera and Walt Disney stuff from 'bibles' (so got bored again), then set up my own company 8 years ago.

Sorry for sounding harsh at the beginning - it's just I hate to think people haven't got the ideas to draw themselves. That's all.

Its ok, and sorry for really getting on the defensive, but u have to admit people on here can be horrible for horribles sake

Im trying to get that creative flair back, in my projects i never get the chance to draw, and the briefs are so heavy I never really get chance to do it for myself, I want to draw for a living, not position and reposition text and photos. All iv done for 21/2 years is conform to try and get a good degree, but Im not happy and now im trying to take risks and do a different solution i get taken aside and bullied or just humiliated in class, so i wouldn't be surprised if i failed, my teacher told me that if I do my current brief the way I want she will fail me.
I'm losing my drawing technique so the idea of this is to try and get it back, ideas will come later hopefully

How about a cat who lives in a bin, wait......

How did that idea ever stick?

GL op, would like to see some stuff, my daughter loves cats, she's only 18 months but goes loopy when she sees them.

How about a cat and a baby? when the parent is off cooking then the cat/baby get up to mischief - as ridiculous as possible (like go to the moon etc.), then back just in time for tea?

I totally understand what you are saying and it is very sad if you feel you are losing your natural flair. Teachers nowadays conform students into industry, not self development.
I'd be very interested in helping you if I can.

PM me if you feel I may be able to help.

In the absence of any input from a creative genius, here's my effort for you.
Tale for tots.

Lonely cat wonders how to persuade the mice to come out of the skirting board. Watches Harry Potter film on the telly. Magic wand floats out of telly to cat. Cat has magic to do all sorts of stuff. Whispers to the mice. Magics peanut butter sandwiches from the kitchen table. Mice love the cat. More magic stuff. Next day the wand doesn't work any more but the mice are still good company. Cat and mice have fun & games.

I like the idea that a cat and mice get on, thankyou :)

Well first of all i'd think about your target audience and what would interest them. I would guess that age range would be in to twilight, harry potter, narnia etc. So think about that, the cat would have a hidden world.
Other ideas could be a kung fu crime fighting, or undercover cat.
#23
Battle Cats..... they fight. make it japenese style. then market the stuff at stupid prices...but parents gotta buy them!

i think the undercover/spy cat is one of the better ideas for the age of children you are trying to aim it at, Im guessing most pre teens are growing out of the cartoon animals so a more complex story might help get them interested.

I love this idea! The scientist thinks its just his faithful moggy but while his back is turned the cat is off in his time machine getting up to all sorts of trouble!
