Help with a greedy work colleague

I need some advice with this one:

A friend of mine and I occasionally go out to lunch together, and we always take turns to pay. A third co-worker sometimes comes along and she never offers to pay, not even cover her own lunch, and I am fed up covering for her when I know she never returns the favor. She is equally greedy at other occasions, eg. paying for coffee, rides etc. I am already dreading our next lunch, as I know she will come along again and it's my turn to pay. How can I avoid covering her part again without being too harsh (we have to work together closely at work, so I don't want her to turn against me). Any advice please?

Change how pay for lunch, split the bill 3 way, that way she will have no option but to pay
#3
pay for your own then everyone is even

She may not realise what is happening so a gentle and kind word beforehand would be good. Keep it friendly and polite "your turn to pay is it?".

Spit at her.

Seriously, it works. One time I was just finishing a shrimp salad with this girl and when she looked at me when the waiter bought the bill over, I spat right in her face (shrimp and all).

She started crying. I ran after her, tripped her up, pinched her purse and paid the bill from that, and kept some change for myself (for the hassle).

Only way to let them know the score.

Just ask her if she minds covering the next lunch when it comes to paying for it. You don't need to say it in a harsh way, you can just put it out there. If she refuses, I guess you can try another approach. Best not invite her in future..

OMG I would just have to say something, it would eat away at me until I said something along the lines of "you greedy tight billy no mates cowbag" and then just punch her straight in the face.

OK I wouldn't really do THAT but I would say something, even if it was jokingly.

I hate the whole splitting bills malarkey, same as getting rounds in, you end up drinking way too much that way, be fair, be square and pay for your share.

Thanks for the answers so far. Is there a still way to cover for the two of us without paying the full bill.

Your just 'nice' of course she knows what she's doing.
I wouldnt tolerate it. Have a word with your other friend and ask for seperate bills. Ie'When they take your order.
Lets face it, I take it your not loaded?

Or don't tell her you're going for lunch.

There are more people out there like that unfortunately.

OP.... just tell her you appreciate that's been saving up to return the treats and look forward to not having to pay for any meals in 2011.

Yeah, give her the money for you and your friends share and ask her to take it to the till, or ask the place to split the bill 3 ways, give your mate the money for her share and let the skanky one pay for her own bill.

I had lunch with a friend and we shared the meal as it was so big, she agreed the next time she'd pay for it, she didn't, so I refused to have lunch with her again. Kept making excuses, she soon got the hint. Also I had to buy my son a book bag from his school, and she asked me to buy her son one and she'd give me the money back that afternoon, I made my excuse that I was going shopping and using the rest for our weekly shop and had no more.

I'm not going to be taken for a fool twice!

So yeah, I personally would either not invite her, make up excuses etc. Or just say "Look, I've got bills to pay too, I can't afford to pay for your lunch, you get your own wages, you can pay for yourself".
She does know what she's doing, and it pees me off when people take advantage of other's like that!

It depends what job the OP does and the type of person she is. It's all good and well us all saying I'd do this, I'd do that, but if she's got to work with her and she's a nasty person- could give her a lot of stress and hassle!!

The reason she only goes with you sometimes is because she's doing the rounds.

If you wanna be extra subtle ask her if she has change for 20 (she might say 'I'll pay') and if you wanna be rude shortchange her.
#26
Why be subtle?! Just tell her to pay its not rocket science! If she is offended that she has to buy her own food then shes not worth bothering with!
#27
Why are you letting her tag along if you don't like her?
#28
get a fourth person, and get him or her to ask shall we split the bill 4 ways,

so you been payinhg for her meals...
hmm are u getting any off her?? lol

next time order the most expensive stuff on the menu, scoff the desserts quickly and then you and your other friend simply stand up and walk out of the restaurant leaving her to pay.
2 Likes #30
Have a quiet word with the friend that pays her way, and just say whenever the stinge bag tags on you are gonna say "need to split 3 ways as I can't afford the whole bill... Times are hard"..... Etc.
Hopefully she will get bored of having to pay her way and go back to being 'alone' as most tight fisted people often are!!!
I used to work with someone similar... Me putting in for collections and never getting it back etc.... HATE tight people!!!!

What does she do when the bill arrives? Sits there twiddling her thumbs? We had a girl like this at work, she would come out for drinks with us and when it came to her round, conveniently she would make her excuses and go home. This happened once too often and now she doesn’t get invited out anymore. No excuse for being a tightwad, especially if you all work together, you are getting the same salary ffs so really she is just taking the p out of your good nature. Next time you go for lunch just blatantly tell her if she wants to tag along that she should know she will be paying for the entire lunch this time. Either that or don’t come and then good riddance to her, and she will know where she stands. Don’t let her walk all over you.

Just walk out and leave her to foot the bill.

We have a friend who has been signing on for as long as i can remember, doing door work, underhand stuff and living it up basically.

Me and another friend plan to go out to an expensive restaurant and leave him to foot the bill. the way we see it he owes us since as taxpayers we have been funding his lifestyle.

So you think I should have paid?

Hell yeah, you are the one bragging you run your own successful company the other day.

I am not at all a confrontational person (I can't imagine what I would do in the restaurant with someone like this) but is there anyway you can chat about lunch with your other friend infront of the tightwad and say jokingly "Oh yeah, it's xxxxx's turn to pay today isn't it Ha ha ha" like in a friendly way and then look at her

Do you actually like this person though? If not, I would try and avoid lunches with her altogether by making an excuse a few times until she gets the hint that she's not invited.

HTH x

Hope you get what I mean!

Fair point.
I feel bad about spitting, mugging, and laughing at that girl now.

Thank you for pointing out my error of judgement.
God bless you.

Why don't you just grass the cheating 'tard up to the dole office if you know he is working while signing on?
