Try reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, I've heard good things about avast, that's free too.

yes its AVG free, I've just clicked restart... is that not the same? sorry not too clever with computers lol. when it restarts it turns my whole laptop off and starts it up again. should I shut it down and turn it on myself ?

Download the latest version (release two weeks ago) via Download.com (that is where the AVG site will redirect you to anyway.) When you install, it will automatically uninstall the old version anyway.............

Could just have a lot of definitions to update...

Open the AVG console, and click the Update Now link on the left bar - Sometimes I find it works when autoupdate or right clicking update doesn't work.

If all else fails, try installing the latest version as has been suggested.

Let us know how you get on.

*edit* Another option is to leave it for a day, see if ti fixes itself, or even a few hours. AVG sometimes can sort itself out if it's out of date and fails to update.
