Help with choosing a mattress from Argos, please?

HI there peeps!

Well, we need to get a new mattress.
Our one is not even a year old but my OHs back hurts him as soon as he lies down and he wakes up with backache, too.

I have got a list up here on Argos of all the King sizes mattresses that are in the sale, like the Silentnight Avante memory mattress, which is kind of what we are after.

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?pp=20&s=Promotions&x=680&y=38&storeId=10001&catalogId=1500000701&langId=-1&q=KING+MATTRESS

Can anyone recommend any of these mattresses, or found them bad?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and rep will be left.

Thanks.

I'm in the same position as you - looking for a memory foam mattress. I tried a few out in Dreams yesterday and they did feel a lot better than my existing mattress.

However, I found a great deal of difference between different memory foam mattresses even with the same 'medium' support grading. Some felt better than others - there really was a big difference. I was going to buy one off the web (pot luck) but after trying several out in the shop, might buy the one that feels best to me even though it won't be a bargain. This probably isn't the answer you're looking for.

By the way - does your bed have 'slats'? If so, your existing mattress isn't working properly. A spring can't give support if it's pushing against thin air! Get some plywood and fit this over the slats and you may find that you don't need a new mattress after all.

Hope this is of some help.

I had the same problem and ummed and aahh'd for ages over a memory foam mattress.
Eventually I bought one from Ebay just before Christmas and its the best thing I ever did
I fully recommend the ones from "viceroybedding" on Ebay.
I have a super king and got mine for £164 (plus delivery)
they are a very deep mattress - excellent quality - cant recommend highly enough - much better than some of the stuff I looked at in Bensons and dreams for 3 times the money.
In my opinion much better than the orthopaedic ones, I had (and still have and dont know what to do with) a sealy posturepaedic ultra luxury which cost over £1000 and is no where near as comfy...though might be better if you need an orthapaedic bed?...
anyone wants it (superking) let me know ...lol

I may well go around tomorrow and try out a few mattresses, good idea.

Obviously, the Argos ones are appealing to me because they are showing as half price, but I will compare the prices also.

My thinking at this moment is to just order one and try it out with the plastic on it LOL!

Seriously, though - are Argos OK with returning mattresses? :-D

Hi. We've just got the Silentnight Avante King Size Memory Mattress from Argos (half price!!) and its fantastic!
Since getting it I've been having the best nights sleep ever and my husband doesnt wake up with a bad back anymore (which he used to on our old mattress)

That mattress is worth what its priced at (sometimes slightly less) if you believe the RRP your kidding yourself.

Argos de-spec there mattresses and you can't find the equivilent named ones anywhere, they do this so they can misguide you into thinking your getting a HALF-PRICE DEAL- when you clearly are not

If anyone can find the Silent Night priced accordingly with the higher WAS price in the cat book price tell me the page number LOL

That is, of course what concerns me.

Guess my best bet would be to find a mattress i like on the high street (and test it if I have the nerve LOL!) and then shop around online.

I am worried as the mattress we got before came from Argos but wasn't a brand name I had heard of. We paid extra for a better mattress and it looks good but just no good on my OHs back. This is also why I wanted to buy a well-known brand in the hope that that will mean better quality.

I am so knackered that by the time my head hits the pillow I am finished no matter what I am sleeping on! :)

If you're after a 'topper', this is a cracking price. Remember that a lot of the memory foam mattresses aren't fully memory foam. They're often simple mattresses with memory foam toppers.

Looks like they've sold out but it's worth checking every so often.

Was it the 329.99 one?

Is it really worth it, then? That is the one I was likely to be going for.

I've been after one for a few weeks now. The argos avante mattress is also available in homebase if you need to try it out, my only concerns is, how many springs etc? No one seems to know. However I tried it in the shop and is favorite so far!!

Aah, really? The memory one? - http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6670214/Trail/searchtext%3EKING+MATTRESS.htm

Will have to go down there tomorrow or Tuesday, thanks!

Am I correct in thinking that Argos and Homebase are related?

I think argos and homebase are part of the same group, surprise!.
Give them a call first, make sure they have it on display, the store in Bromley had about 6 matresses on display, good luck!

However still interested in Cols selection, superb number of pocket springs with foam, shame you can't try before you buy!!!!

I tried this out also, bought my bed recently from Homebase in the sale. Thought the mattress was ok but I have tried better, mainly ones with pocket Springs and memory foam which is why I recommended the ones above. This Silentnight is continuous springs, they do make pocket sprung ones to but they cost a lot more generally.

I am interested in the ones you posted but am just concerned about not getting to try it out first, or at least the option to return it.

Yeah good idea to try if you can.

If you find the same brands with similar spec (mem foam same number of pocket springs and firmness) you should get a very good idea and good thing about site I mentioned is quidco could be over £20 on a £300 mattress :)
