Help with Domain name

mrtootough Avatar
8y, 2m agoPosted 8 years, 2 months ago
I have created a website using dreamweaver and thought I'd ask some of the web gurus for advice.
I currently have a domain name registered through windows office live.
Can I upload my new website in HTML onto the office live site ?
or can I transfer my domain to 123 reg or similar. If so, what are the pitfalls, things to look out for etc.
I would still like to receive e-mail at that domain if possible.

never used Ms Live, jus because I use DW or FP which do the job, then use Cute FTP to upload.

what type of site you done, wanna give me a look
#2
don't you get free hosting with office live?

you can transfer it to 123reg if you like, but i think there is a 9.99 charge for transfers.

I assume you got a free dopmain with MS Live that they have bought for you? If so, I know there is a tie in period with it (6 months I think).

You cant FTP to your current host with MSN - so you would need to get a web host to upload your new dreamweaver site to. Then either transfer the domain or use nameserver tags from within the control panel of your domain host. But you need to clarify how the domain came about and who "bought it". If it was already yours (ie you bought it from 123-reg), then you are already free to do as you please.

OK, thats pretty much what I thought.... Though that charge is OTT. (They only charge about £6.50 for 2 years!!!!)

You will need to contact your current domain host (The one I have is registered in OZ) and either tell them to transfer out - else set the nameserver tags to point to wherever you chose to host the site itself.

Best way is to get a free hosting account (like the one that faireangel uses) and upload it.

they must have changed it then. you need to find out who they registered the address with (check the address on www.who.is) and then ask them to transfer (all a load of hassle though )

They are widgets from a site called PVII, figured out how to FTP them, but the site still won't take them. Would 123Reg allow them? File extension is .jsf - something to do with Fireworks.

Yes

I came on here to get help - lol
Think you'll find that the pop3 is "mail.domain name.co.uk" - i.e. mail.discoswebsite.co.uk
and smtp is "smtp.btconnect.com" or similar
I'm not at work at the minute, but will check for you in the morning.
It might be the other way around.

Our ISP is BTconnect.
It may be the other way around smtp.discoswebsite.co.uk
in fact I think it is. put mail.btconnect.com or whomever your ISP is in the pop3 box

have logged in to fasthosts, will have a look around.

not that big, 142 kbytes for example. I think it's to do with the file type. FTP programe won't let them upload but will do for the image files.

.jsf files types are banned for free users....... to get it activated ..... you need to spend $19 (american site) on upgrades e.g. mysql, send mail etc

you could store the file on a file host e.g. file den ... then link to it on ya web pages :-D

Oooh. Excellent. I do like PV11 widgets. Use them all the time.Very easy to use and look the biz.

Not sure why you are asking about 123-reg though. You are trying to upload to 100mb are you not?

Edit. Just saw the reply above re .jsf extensions.

Have a go with 34sp.com I know for a fact PV11 works with them. Its £17.99 per year to host with them - but I cant recommend them highly enough.

Have to agree, the widgets are fantastic. My first ever proper site looks better than about 90% of the sites on the net. I have no idea how it works, but it gives extremely professional results. If only I could get it uploaded lol.
Thanks for all the advice.
