Help with new SATA Hard Drive Please ??!!

Please excuse me if this is a stupid question or I have missed something obvious, but I have never before bought a SATA HDD new and therefore presumably unformatted.

Anyway got a new WD 500GB from Scan today and put it into my IcyBox external enclosure but could not see the drive on any PC

So put it into my desktop PC obviously on a SATA controller on the motherboard. Cannot see the drive in My Computer but can see it in device manager.

Then tried it with another USB to SATA convertor and again cannot see the drive in My Computer but can see it in Device Manager.

Am I doing something stupid here as I cannot see the drive to even format it?

Whenever I have bought the old IDE HDD I have just added it to the PC, My Compter sees it and then the drive can be formatted.

Any yes the IcyBox, desktop PC and USB to SATA adapter are all working because they can see my other SATA HDD.

Any help freatfully received

TIA

you need to format

right click mycomputer, manage, click "storage>disk management" then right click the new drive and format!

Can you right click on drive in computer management ( the box where it says 465.75gb unallocated). You should get option to mark partition as active or the option to format the drive.

The no entry sign means it's offline doesn't it?

Perhaps try formatting it with a bootCD of some sort.

When you right click to you get the option to iniatlize the disk?

Boot up your pc go into BIOS and make sure that Sata is enabled

Edit - the reason you have this problem is windows hasn't detected the drive properly so hasn't assigned any drivers to it. It may let you right click it and choose initialise if your lucky

The disk management console screenshot above is showing Windows as having detected it correctly and loaded the drivers for it.
