Does it happen with other films? Perhaps The Marine is grainy in places?

Edit- Just re-read and you mentioned it. Perhaps borrow something like Finding Nemo, that's definitely not got grain to test.

What TV do you have? How is it connected? What is the output set to?

It's all about the source material.

Get yourself a pixar or the Dark Knight Blu-ray - to test out your set up

Check out these links, theres also other sites that agree with this:

Some BD films are grainy due to being poorly tranfered.

its a shame if they expect us to pay upto £18.99 on a grainy blu ray maybe its better on an actually blu ray player and not PS3? i heard the sony S550 its mean't to be better than PS3?

We play ours on a dedicated HD player and not a PS3, like the sites say : some films are better than others, its not the player

Some films just transfer poorly over onto bluray. '300' is also quite grainy. Not really a technical solution, but I notice that the films appear a lot less grainy when watched from further away, especially on the bigger screens. Its definitely not the player. Some players do have better qualities than others i.e more up to date menu functions etc but really a ps3 is one of the best players you can get. You dont have to contact your manufacturer every time a firmware update comes out as the ps3 will download it online (if your connected to the internet obviously), and it has some of the most intuitive blu ray functions in any player. Players dont differ noticably on picture quality, its all about how the quality is recorded onto the blu ray disc itself. Like these guys said, try a pixar film or something like the dark knight or transformers. If its still grainy then theres a problem
