Best bet is to take it to the post office and get the prices of the different services (2nd / 1st class, recorded, special delivery) especially as prices have changed since they introduced the size-dependent charging system.

63p for 1st class I think.

And I think it's 65p extar if you want recorded.

Do you know in general though? Im a post newbie and just want to go in there and say can I post this by this method as Im on a tight schedule today!

Its worth about £30 if thats helps? Whats the method most people use on here to post a DVD and how much does it usually cost?

All the prices are available on the Royal Mail website.

I try and use Special Delivery for anything valuable, but it can be pricey for small or inexpensive items.

Next best would be Recorded Signed For, which is basically first class postage with a signature required at the other end, but offers free insurance at 10 times the cost of a first class stamp. This is probably your best bet.

Then you have the cheaper options of uninsured first and second class.

Recorded Delivery. About £1.12. Check here.

If your item has a value less than £32 then use recorded delivery method. items are insured up to £32.00.

usually 1st class with proof of postage, you'll need to get it weighed/measured to get the exact price.

I wouldn't go for recorded delivery. It doesn't offer any extra insurance/protection, all it does is let you know when it's arrived. On top of that, the recipient needs to be in to sign for the parcel. Also royal mail have, on more than one occasion, inputted my delivery wrong so they never end up saying "delivered" on their computer system. So it was a waste of 60p on these occasions.

If you're worried about the parcel, go for special delivery, which costs around £4 and guarantees delivery before 1pm the following day (I think, or it may be 3pm - not 100% sure).

Thank you! Much appreciated! Rep++

Recorded delivery does not offer any extra insurance, 1st class is insured up to £32 anyway.

Also with recorded delivery the insurance claim (should you end up needing one) is not speeded up as they still wait about 2 weeks for it to be delivered.

I had a look at 3 different royal mail sites, found it a bit hard to navigate through!! I trust member advice on here more than I do companies

Go for 1st class but get proof of postage. That way you can make a claim if it gets lost. As long as the recipient can let you know that it's arrived, and you don't need legal "proof" that it's been delivered, then just go for 1st class.

Why don't you just go into the post office, act all ignorant and ask for his advice. Don't forget to tell him what way you would like it and then ask if there is an alternate.

I say this because the PO as general, send 'dumb' people into various branches to test the staff and if they offer bad advice or over price the goods they could loose their jobs. I just go in and tell them I want, to get there the cheapest or whatever. Sometimes it has been cheaper to send by air than by surface, when I thought it would be the other way around.

They are not there to catch you out, in fact they think it is the other way around.

1st class with recorded delivery is how i would go, i reckn it will be no more than £2, you'll know when its arrived and its insured to £32 :)

still insured to £32 if you pay 1st class.

and many times when I've gone for recorded delivery it's never ended up being shown as "delivered" on their online database thing
