Help with pumpkin plant

As the wife and I got a house with a garden this year and both love Halloween we decided to grow out own pumpkins so planted some seeds and duly waited, and lo and behold they have grown really well, unfortunately a bit too well!

From searching on the net most places suggest you don't cut back the plant and just let it grow, but it seems to me that the size of the plant must be taking good stuff away from the fruit?

Pics below should show you what I mean, that is 2 plants and there is only 4 fruits between them!

What do you guys reckon should I cut it back or just leave it and see what happens?

Probably better asking in this thread "Over the garden fence"

Our neighbour has his own veg patch and it's done terrible this year. usually its full of lots of different fruits and the flowers on his pumpkin plant havent even bloomed so..

I am sure I heard somewhere that you should never prune a plant when it is in flower

Won't the leaves be doing the photosynthesis to 'feed' the fruit? I'd say not prune, butyou weill need to perhaps put something underneath the pumpkins to keep them off the ground, straw etc...

Chop off the leading shoots at about the 60/80cm mark. Really you should have stopped them a while back!!:D
Feed them well and keep them moist.
Harvest when the foliage dies down.

Aardvaarking, the pumpkins will be fine on the patio flags etc. People often use tiles under the fruits.

There is an old rat cage underneath the plant which most of the fruits are sat on so they are not directly on the ground.

I knew there was a garden thread on here but forgot all about it!

Thanks chesso, all the advice I could find online told me not to cut them back unless they reached around 20 feet long!!

I have noticed the pumpkins have started to turn orange already but they are not very big yet so hoping this does not mean they will stay the size they are.
