Help with SD card please?

Boyfriend bought a 4GB SD HC memory card from play the other day. He put it in his camera and the camera would turn on but there were no functions availiable. Put it in mine and my camera tried to format it, but it then came up with check card. Any ideas? Is it the wrong type of card?

In the dark on this one so any help much appreciated.

Can the cameras you both have support 4GB cards?

Didn't realise it would make a difference with it being a separate entity to the camera.
Will try and find a site to check that out.

If you get stuck tell us what make and model numbers the camera's are and someone on here is bound to know if they are SDHC compatible or not.

The cameras probably do support 4Gb but not SDHC.

His is a Praktica DCZ 5.3 (looking at getting a decent new one so may be asking advice on that soon :))
Mine is a Samsung Digimax S800

Have found 2GB cards for his but no bigger, so it could be the card size.

Whats the difference with SD HC then?

Any SD Card that is OVER 2GB must be SDHC ......HC meaning High Capacity.

Unfortunately after a quick Google Search it appears that both your camera's are NOT SDHC compatible.

The biggest size of SD Card they can take is 2GB.

SDHC, the 'HC' stands for high capacity, an SDHC card will not work in cameras like yours that do not support SDHC, my bet is ask if you can return the card and buy a 2Gb SD, you'll get plenty of images on that! If they won't return it you'll probably get a good return here or on feezbay

So they would take a standard 4GB SD then?

Would probably go with a 2GB SD. That I am sure would hold all the pictures needed anyway,

LOL....i knew the non-standard 4GB SD Cards would confuse the issue so didn't mention it.

General rule for compliancy is if it's over 2GB it's SDHC.

Just use a bog standard 2GB SD card you'll get more than enough photo's on it !

With regard to your 4GB SDHC Card you bought from Play ......if you got a USB - SDHC Card Reader with it .....just use it as a 4gb Memory stick for file backup.........or flog it on here or Ebay !

damn, sorry to confuse the issue, best get a 2Gb SD, sell other or keep it as backup or get a USB reader for it

While 4GB SD cards exist (non-SDHC) they rarely seem to work properly and may as well not exist, if the camera does not support SDHC then I'd recommend sticking to 2GB SD cards as mentioned above.
