You know how you can permanently delete email messages in Outlook 2003 by pressing Shift-Delete, well, a certain idiot (me) has permanently deleted a message that I shouldn't have. I have tried various fixes - like creating a Dumpster registry key and even corrupting my pst file and running a pstscan job to correct it (as suggested in a few forums) but still no luck.
So, do any of you lovely people know of any free programs that can restore hard-deleted emails?

just restore from a backup (outlook.pst)

Do you [read: do your settings in Microsoft Outlook] remove e-mail messages from your (Internet Service Provider's) mail server after downloading to your local machine, or are they retained online (for a certain period; typically 30 days, but this differs depending on your Provider)?

If your messages are retained online you could create a new e-mail account in Microsoft Outlook with the same mail server details are those you currently have set-up & re-download the messages again (then just copy them from the new Outlook account to your existing one).

Thanks for your ideas guys. Restoring from the backup didn't appear to work, and my settings download the messages from our mail server and deletes the server copy.
In the end, I swallowed my pride and asked the originator of the email to send it through again - I was even honest enough to say that it was my own stupid fault rather than trying to blame the computer.
Thanks again.

You could have just said you didn't receive it in the first place! :)

Can't remember if this will work with the desktop version of outlook, but when I use the online version (OWA) if you go to options and then deleted items, it keeps the messages you deleted for ages until you delete them from there.

I would image there should be something like that in the desktop one but it's been a while since I have had access to the desktop one.
