So I want to buy this next week when it comes out via the student section...however I'm not sure exactly how its going to work. I currently have Vista on my Vaio, so would I just purchase the £30 download copy, put it on a CD/DVD and install it? Is it that simple? OR could I install it via an external HDD? I'm really not sure how it all works, the microsoft website isn't so clear.

It's a straight download. They will send you a link via email and then there will be a link you need to click to start downloading

he knows that already...

You can put it on a dvd or extract it to a memory stick/hdd and use that. You can also order a set of dvd's if you dont want to burn them yourself.

store it on the harddrive then use nero or another to add to disc as normal. That is what I have done and it works fine.

I you subscribe to MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) you can download the final code (in fact you have been able to download it for weeks)

What version of Vista have you got (Home Basic, Home Premium etc)?

What version of Windows 7 have you bought?

This can affect your ability to upgrade.

It does sound as though you have not done a Windows install or upgrade before.

Now I dont wish to alarm you, but an upgrade can go wrong and you could delete all your own files (if you accidently do a format during the install for example, or of the upgrade goes wrong).

So before doing ANY sort of upgrade backup ALL your personal files, and make a note of important userids and passwords and email settings that you may want to keep.

There are some videos here about upgrading (note some are from XP, others are from Vista)
