hi
I am looking for some advice on the best 360 deal to buy for my 10 and 12 year olds this xmas. i am starting to get confused with the various types of 360 out there, elite, premium, arcade??:? my sons have between them a ps2, psp, wii and xbox. i have no doubt that they would know all the answers to my questions but i dont want to raise suspicion (or there hopes) regarding a :santa: pressie!
Which do i go for? I am not bothered about internet connection, i do want them to be able to save their gameplay and they have numerous xbox games i would like them to play on the 360. please can you shed a little light on my dilemma :giggle:

Get an xbox pro (20gb hard drive, hdmi port), its all they need. Its £199.99 here: http://www.shopto.net/page.php?page=dettagli&codart=XB23600

£249.99 at most other places so a fantastic price at shopto. Will be delivered next day, fantastic company.

I got that earlier today and its being delivered tomorrow. An elite is exactly the same but it comes with an extra 100gb of hard drive space, its black and has a hdmi cable, not with the extra.

HDMI is worth having if you'v got a HDTV, and the extra space is handy if you stream/download alot of trailers.
Might be worth buying as late as possible given the new Falcon chips (which as 65nm versions run cooler, and quieter, while using less electricity) that are slowly coming onto the market (at the mo very few of them out, and most 360s are the older stock with older chips).

HDMI is high definition multimedia interface - ie a fancy cable taking sound and high quality pictures from your console to the tv - if you'v got a big screen high definition tv it makes the games look incredible.
If not it's a waste of time having for a CRT.

The new chips using 65 nano meter techonology ie they are thinner. This means they don't make as much sound, and are more energy efficient BUT Microsoft don't say on the box exactly what your getting (as otherwise old stock would never sell), so right now if you like saving a little electricity, and not having so much noise/ heat (as overheating has been a problem with 360s) it's worth waiting a little bit.

If your on a budget though the core is still good - (the cheapest). Arcade is simply a core with a couple of free games, and a 64mb memory card = more than enough to save games on, and way cheaper than the other versions.

the tv they will be playing on is not a HD tv so quality isnt an issue, can they play their original xbox games on the 360?

You'll need a hard drive for that - so if you buy a core it's worth picking up an older 20 gig one separately (£44.99 at woolies). Or just go for the pro as Bryan said if you can afford it all at once.

 thanks sean, much appreciated, i will prob go with the one bryan mentioned. each christmas/ birthday it gets harder to know what to get my boys!!

Get em nothing :P can't get it wrong then.
Might be worth keeping an eye on FS/T forum here for a few bargains - and checking toysrus as they sporadically clear out games at £4.99 (mostly king kong/eragon etc but nice fillers)

Also a few of my friends have 360's and use them on 14" TV's, which there is no point. The graphics on 360 with a 14" TV are the same as the original xbox, so really your paying for something that looks pretty(cosmetically), but isn't really any better, until you get a HDTV.

Maybe they'll get a 32" hd tv for their birthdays :giggle:

You can connect a 360 to a PC monitor for HD if you buy a separate 360 VGA cable. Not as good as a big TV but a cheap option if your kids want HD in the future. I have mine connected to a 19" widescreen Acer monitor I picked up at Argos for £130.

As far as Xbox1 games, some are. Here is a list.

they will be playing on a 28" flat screen but not HD, is it still worth getting the 360, the boys are complaining that all the new games are not available on original xbox only 360.

Many people play on normal TV's with no problems. The only real difference is the picture won't be as sharp.

If in the future you decide you want an HD picture you can either stick it on an old PC monitor or buy a cheap HDTV like a Mirai or a Hanspree for under £300.

I have a 360 and use it on a 28'' CRT widescreen TV (Not HD).If you get an s-video cable or RGB scart (Check eBay,get them for under a tenner) picture quality is really good (Check which your set accepts).Significant improvement from standard AV lead.Whilst HD TV sets do work very well with 360's you do not need one.Well worth getting a 360 for them,Its a great console.Hope this helps:) .
