Hi guys,

quite an odd one but we allowed someone to use our drive to hold there car whilst they saved up to get it repaired (so they dont have to continue with car insurance and tax they dont have a drive you see so it would have been on the road) now its been here for around 2 months but a couple of weeks ago they kicked off about something and nothing and basically teated us like cr*p and we have decided that we would like them to remove their car from our drive after all why should we do them a favour after speaking to us like that, we have spoken to the police and they have advised us that its a civil matter and the best thing to do is sent them a letter recorded delivery with a suitable time for them to remove their car otherwise we will get it scrapped, im just at a loss how to start such a letter any ideas would be much appreciated!

Be civil and polite, keep to the point so its clear to them.

I'd suggest avoiding the course of action the police recommended.

If you start formalising this, it starts down the road of litigation, expense, embedded hard feelings.

Even though it may be the last thing you want to do, try talking to them, & telling them you need to free-up the drive, & would they mind moving it.

My tuppence-worth.

i wouldn't bother with a letter, ring them up or go to their house and tell them to move their car or you'll move it for them

unfortunately they arent the civil type of people we tried calling but unfortunately just ended up getting a load of abuse down the phone and we were only asking them to move there car, just to give an insight to the type of people they called up there youngest daughter on the same night and told her that she was a mistake and they never wanted her, i would have been quite happy to keep this as easy as please can you move your car as soon as (esp as we cant get into our shed because the car blocks it off) but they just have made this into a really akwad situation.

You can't just tell them to move it or you will.

I would ask nicely, if that does not happen you do need to start formal requests in writing if you want it gone, there is certain procedures and time limits you have to follow with "abandoned" cars check exactly with the cab.

Edit just seen reply, you can't just move it, without contacting them formally first and putting notices on the car etc, contact the cab.

What beats me is why you let people like this use your drive in the 1st place?
Surely you knew what they were like before?

It's in HIS driveway, if he wants it moving then he can move it. I'd just tell them that if they don't move it within 7 days you will arrange for it to be taken away at their cost.

of course they can get it removed, it's on their property. you don't need to put notices on a car which is parked on your drive

you cant scrap it, they will ask for log book
where are you going to tow it to? storage, it will be in your name as you arranged it, so you will pay

its very simple, give them a fair short chance to move it, sent by letter, then just push it into the road

the dvla or police will soon see it and tow it, and contact the owner and fine them for a vehicle that is on the road with no tax
