Yes, I have! The people are lovely - very friendly! I went in Winter... if you can, get a flight to Lapland... you cross the Arctic circle, ride reindeers, build houses from ice etc! If you have kids, they have special trips where you go and sit in a teepee kind of thing and the locals tell stories and cook you dinner, then you visit "Santa"!! Be prepared for cold though... it was between -30 and -35C every day and there's very few sun hours!

Each to their own I suppose but I could think of 100 places I'd rather be than Helsinki.
-35 degrees! Why would you want to endure that?

I went years and years ago so I can't remember about food and drink, but actually getting there and staying there isn't cheap! We went for 4 or 5 days and it was over £1,000 (including excursions) so maybe no good for you if you want cheap but definitely worth a visit in the future! Not sure about cost in Helsinki as we were only there for a day but it's a brilliant place - go go go!

Did a lot of work in Finnland, over last 5 years mainly went to Helsinki and Turku, (Home of the Moomins!) to socialise with they are great to work with they are a bit odd.

Try the Salmiakki drink whilst there and the reindeer steak in cloudberry sauce is to die for.

Helsinki is a great city.

You are best to try and go during Pikku-Joulu (Little Christmas) which is in early December normally. They have their christmas early there so that the darkening nights have some bright feelings to them :)

helsinki can be very cold in december - I was there on the 18th december and it was minus 25, but no it doesnt usually get so cold as the North / Lapland.

I recommend Tampere (ryaniar fly there) which is where nokia is based - a very beautiful city, on the place where 2 lakes meet.

Helsinki is best if you not visited finland before though as you can also take amazing overnight ferry to stockholm and visit there, and also to Tallinn in Estonia which is lovely.

Porvoo is a lovely day trip away from Helsinki on the coast too. Finland is generally pretty safe and you wont get ripped off as in Britain so it is not as expensive as people think. Great supermarkets too.

Little Christmas is a good time as everyone is excited by it and there are cool christmas markets. It is not qutie so dark either. May well not be snow then however - if you want to be sure of snow I would aim for mid-end January and february is great when it has got a bit lighter and snow will be everywhere.

It is not far too from russia and many take a wee trip to St Petersburg, but thats a different place entirely and not for the faint hearted :)

I know, thankfully, the client site paid for all my expenses whilst out there.
Dont forget to pack your thermals, I encountered -16 chuck in a bit of wind factor and it was -22, but great fun, my colleague over there was mid fifties and female and she could powerslide her volvo around corners with skillz.

She arranged a driving course for me where I learnt how to do Scandinavian flicks and took me to a frozen lake where I was introduced to a nutter, who fitted R1 bike engines to off road buggies with evil spiked tyres. Was an amazing night blasting buggies across the ice, was frozen silly but you couldnt wipe the smile of my face.
