Not enough info! Ages of sister(s?)? Why that breed? Parents opinion? Financial stuff? Space? Allergies/asthma?
It's a huge responsibility to own a dog and not cheap - ever. I absolutely love dogs but they are not animated toys.
#8
nope dont let her! people always promise they will feed, walk etc...never happens-and a dog is expensive to care for-hols are a nightmare-and vet bills...make her prove she can pay for it's upkeep first?
work out injections-food and insurance for vet bills? make sure she has saved per week for a month or more the amount to keep the dog to prove she can do it?

im sorry sweet, but if you start including vet fees for little things like eye/ear infections, annual boosters, virus's etc the amount per year will be far more than you have put.
I love my 2 dogs to bits but owning one is a huge responsibilty and your whole family must be committed to it. xx

My personal opinion is that cats are the best pet. They are affectionate, clean up after themselves and are self sufficient. Dogs smell, poo lots, jump up, try to steal your food and embarrass the hell out of you if you chance it and let them off the lead outdoors!! This opinion is based on owning 3 cats and 6 dogs since I flew the nest. I have also been bitten by a dog in an unprovoked attack, so give me a cat anyday!! :-D

I just watched someone elses cat carp in my garden. I've got it in a bag if you'd like to tell the owner!

Don't look confused...it's cheaper than buying monkey food....

I'll side with u. I have two cats and there a nightmare in themselves. The fur, the hassling round my legs but most of all, trying to find somewhere and/or forking out to look after them if u go away. It's worse with dogs and more of a struggle, at least my neighbour can come in twice a day and feed them - can't really do that with a dog. Seriously, don't bother - more hassle then they're worth!!

I'm agreeing that £125 a year is nothing like, even ignoring the initail cost.. It's a massive undertaking and needs to be thought through very carefully.

IMO its cats that are the bad ones, grumpy and willing to scratch you for no reason, make mess everywhere, smell, love to steal food just as much as a dog would.

My brother had his eye scratched by a cat he just went to pet, he had vision problems for ages afterwards.

Dogs are the most affectionate when treated the right way, lick you, jump up to you and want to cuddle you roll over etc.

My kids are desperate for a dog, but I will side with you.

poop all over the garden, dog hairs all over the house, out for walkies in the rain, expensive vet bills.

A freind of my got attacked last week by two dogs whilst she was out walking her new pup, I dread to think what would have happened if it was her 8yr old son who has taken it for a walk.

she was bitten by the other two dogs who actully got her on the floor!
these dogs were roaming around, - no collar or owners! :x
Police were not interested.

I love dogs and think they are great but they are a big responsibility (just like kids)
you cant go on hols and leave them, noone will look after them for you, and kennels are cruel and cost a fortune.

I am on your side ;-)

haha. Thats probably right. Make sure you dont get some sort of rodent substitute. They are the worst of all and far more trouble than they are worth!

i reckon my mum wants the dog more than all of us or she could just be doing a favour for her sis

During its life (10 or more years) a dog is a LOT of work.

Feeding it, walking it, clearing up after it, paying for vets fees etc.

You also have to decide what to do with it when you go on holiday, or if everyone is out for the day.

Cats are not so much work. You never need to walk them, they poop quietly in the corner of the garden and cover it up afterwards, and they spend most of the day curled up asleep in a corner somewhere.

Despite what your sister says she will NOT walk it every day for 10 years, and will soon tire of clearing up its mess in the garden or out on the pavement when (if) she takes it for a walk.

If the family are not sure DONT get a dog, as it is cruel to get a dog that is not looked after properly.

the dog will miss you if you. would you like to be locked up in a strange place without familiar faces for a week or more. awwwww sooooo cruel.

my dogs have been going to the same kennels twice a year for the past 8 years, they both share a large kennel and happily run to the owner each time they are dropped off. Trust me, I would know if my dogs were unhappy.

I am a massive fan of dogs, we've had a little cocker spaniel for 12 years now and he's been one of the best decisions ever made.

However owning a dog is not something to be taken lightly mainly because they are time consuming, it's not fair on them unless you are prepared to give them regular exercise and playtimes. I find it's a lot easier when there are multiple people around to help as when I'm on my own it is hard going.

I don't know where that figure of 125 pounds came from as it's meaningless, Jake has gone through that much in a single vet consultation.

I agree with everything said, it's a huge responsibility but, the rewards are worth it.
Our family wouldn't be without Molly now our 2 year old Black Lab.
She was rescued by Battersea Dogs Home after being neglected and then abandoned by her previous owner who probably found that the responsibilty was too much.

I've got cats and a dog, both are as bad as the other. Cats are more self sufficient but no more/less affectionate than the dog. They just show affection differently. Dogs are just as likely to attack as cats are, I've been bitten/scratched by both (not my own I'd like to point out) in unprovoked attacks.

They both smell sometimes, create mess and cost a lot of money. Plus they both need a lot of time and effort.

All that said, I think both are worth it and wouldn't be without either.

PS. To the person that said cats clean up after themselves, could you please send your cat around to teach ours how to clean it's own litter tray lol.
#37
I have 2 dogs and 6 cats. They get on fine together - the dogs have been taught not to bother the cats although the cats can look after themselves! My dogs are big dogs also. As everyone else has said it's about commitment, time and money. A decision that should be made carefully and thoughtfully.

Firstly if financial reasons are any issue over getting it then you need to seriously look at that figure lol! One vet visit will cost u about 50 quid even if theres nothing wrong with the dog and it needs no treatment! Add the food, chews, cleaning products, boosters, wormers, flea treatments, insurance and that figure could be 5 - 10 times that amount easily.

Oh and as someone said, its even risky just walking a dog these days as so many owners are irresponsible and have staffys (jewellry to chavs) off the lead round here. Im a big bloke and shout at anyone who lets their dog close but a young girl might not be so effective.
