They are doing my head in today. I am currently going through my third round of hiccups today. The first 2 lasted about half an hour each at about 3 and 6 pm and now i've got them again... It makes it worse that i make this really horrible burp like sound and i throw my head by slightly because of the power in the hiccup. Proper annoying!

Anyone know any real cures that doesn't involve standing on your head and drinking water or saying the alphabet backwards?

A hiccup is caused by a spasm of the diaphragm, so basically you've got to find a way to correct that, and I don't really see how saying the alphabet in any direction is going to do anything apart from promote speech, which from my own drunken experience of hiccups tends to do absolutely jack. The best method I've used is to take a super-deep breath, hold it, count to ten, and then release. Repeat a few times. Should be okay after.

Also, lay off the buckie in future, kiddo.

You might have a tumour in your brain causing them...

I read somewhere that pressing between your nose and top lip stops hiccups because its an acupuncture point to do with the diaphram. Have been doing that when I get hiccups since I read it and it has always worked for me, I hold breath at same time

Just for future reference :)

Something I saw on TV once (possibly Casualty or ER - no really!)
If you TRY to hiccup when you've got hiccups you won't be able to do it and then your hiccups will stop. Works for me anyway.
