If you got a 28" TV and you want LCD or plasma then you should be looking at 32" TV's

Samsungs are great. I just got the New 46" M86 model which are 1080P For £500 I dont think your gonna get 1080P as I think the smallest 1080P TV's are around 37"

£500 for a 32" you are only looking at 720P TV's

my 28" crt had a screen size of 26", and i think thats the norm, so a 26" lcd would be the same screen size as your current tv. LG do a 42" plasma for £599, its on this site somewhere and is a huuuge improvement on screen size, and its a lot of screen and quality for the money.
A 32" lcd would have roughly the same overall dimensions maybe as your old crt but with a larger viewing screen. The difference is very noticable too.

i found this 42" plasma £565 plus delivery http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/183260/art/hitachi/42pd6600-plasma-screen.html

a 32" lcd for only £330 + delivery http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/542596/art/mirai/dtl-332m200-lcd-tv.html

that sony one you have listed is £513 + delivery here too http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/525411/art/sony/kdl32s2530-bravia-lcd-tv.html

That 42inch plasma looks too good to be true 1024 x 1024 pixels and high contrast rate of 1,000 (which isnt high considering you can get 8000:1 and its 107cm wide i mean whys it so cheap

Heres Review "This is without doubt the worst TV I have ever bought. I bought a Samsung DVD upscaler three weeks ago, used it via HDMI, watched one film, it blew the board, comet came out to fit a new board, same day watched a DVD and blew the board again, they’re coming out again this week, £339 to replace the board so the receipt says, everything else has been tested and its ok, do not buy this TV it's crap. Even the picture is rubbish."

What about this samsung 32inch http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000O14EWA/ref=amb_link_macro_41726265/203-3875247-0308764

That any good
