Hi

I have a holiday booked in Crete for next week but my agency have just called and asked can I attend a second interview for a job on Wednesday.

I did say to the agency and when I went for the job that I will be unavailable until the 25th.

I have to call the agency back on Monday but I don't know what to do. Should I
ask for another date and risk the job going to someone else or should I cancel the holiday and hope that I get the job ?

Yes I really want this job as it is a very good job with a company car etc. I've been unemployed for 4 months now so it is important to me that I get back into work before I start to lose my skills.
I do think I have a very good chance of getting this job as it is the same job that I have been doing for the last 10 years. This second interview is to be out in the field with a senior engineer working along side him on customer sites.

To be honest, if I was in your position from what you've just said I would drop the holiday and go for the job - it sounds good especially as you've been unemployed for four months. Admittedly I've found it immensely frustrating being out of work and finding suitable jobs was very intermittent, for a while I couldn't seem to find anything and then within a month of finding a job, I received three other offers.

I'd say go for the Job, You can book another holiday, But you might not be able to find another good job.

If you do go on holiday, It would probably show to the company that you aren't that fussed about the job, Then they might choose someone else.

I don't expect anything back. The fight is 7am Tuesday morning. I'm set to lose about £650 inc parking fees if I don't get the job.

shame there isn't a way you could claim back on travel insurance for cancelling it :-(

Might be able to get some of the cash back.

I'll give my dilemma, see what you think for this one....holiday with a 3/4 month old baby, leave baby behind, or all of us lose out...what you lot think?

I would go for the interview, as it is your future that's involved.

Would you really enjoy your holiday anyway knowing you had turned down a possible opportunity for a job you want?

At the end of the day, it's your decision, but what ever you choose to do I hope all goes well for you and good luck.

Really tricky problem. If you ditch the holiday but still don't get the job you miss out twice. If the take the holiday and don't get the job, you may not necessarily have got the job anyway. If you take the holiday you may still get the job. So - the worst case scenario is worse if you don't take the holiday, and the best case scenario is better if you do take the holiday (ie you take the holiday and they offer you the interview/job on return).

Also, if you made it clear you would be unavailable before the 25th, they should take that into consideration. Unless the position needs to be filled urgently you'd think they would wait (presumably the already consider you a decent candidate from your 1st interview).

I reckon if you think you have less than a 50-50 chance of getting the position, take the holiday. Be extremely polite and apologetic in declining the interview and explain that the trip is unavoidable (say its a wedding/visiting relatives rather than just a normal holiday). Hopefully they will offer to change the date or consider you at a later time.

That maybe true but the wife and kids have not. They will be missing out too.
#21
But next time you'll have a better holiday as you'll be earning then.

This is a second interview, so they are interested, try to change the date of the interview, my guess is the agents ignored your request, so talk to the company direct and tell them the truth, ring them first thing and say you are available today.

If they won't move the date then that tells you something about the company

How long is the holiday can you fly out later and use part of it, will depend where it is and if there are flights available.
#23
Id go with your hearts feeling, only you will truely know which to do. If you feel you will get more from the holiday like quality family time, then in my opinion thats worth a heap more than money :-)

Holiday every time.. cant put a price on time away from the grind stone

Sod the inteview, jobs are ten a penny and you are not g'teed this one.

Crete is a lovely place, and nothing is worth losing £650 over.

If they can't re-arrange the interview, would you really want to work for a firm that are unable to accomodate even with a valid reason?

I for one wouldn't.
#26
If you can't re-arrange the interview would your wife and kids not go alone or would they stay here too? No matter what decision you do end up making it will be for the best!

Update:

I've phoned the agency this morning and the company are prepared to wait until I come back from my Holiday

Their senior engineer is going to call me this afternoon to make arrangements for when I come back.

Funny thing is another agency phoned me this morning about a new interview next week, I just told them no chance and to call me when I get back. :)

Sorry for that just like to mention it.

Know you didnt mean anything by it,

Thanks for asking.

I should have had a day out with their engineer on Wednesday but he was stuck on a call and we have now made arrangements for this Monday.

I have since been to two other interviews.

One on Thursday for a similar role but with a much larger company. I'm waiting to hear back from them.
The other interview I went to on Friday. This is for an on-site Engineer in Liverpool. I've been told that I'm in the last two and they will call me on Monday and let me know.

So hopefully I should get an offer from one of them on Monday.

Good luck, lets hope you get offered 3 jobs.

I've been for yet another interview today with another company. (just like buses they all seem to arrive at once)

The second interview with the engineer went well but he has to report back. From what he said if all goes well he will see me again.

In the mean time I have more or less been offered a position with a much larger IT company. All we are waiting for, is for one of the managers to come back from her holidays tomorrow and to sign on the dotted line.

That will be four interviews in less than a week and two offers. I must be doing something right. :)
