How about Cornwall? Lived there most of my life, have got places like, Eden project, Newquay zoo, Springfield farm prk, Creally cornwall, boat trips, national maritime museum at Falmouth,Flambards, The lizard and lands end, large aqaurium just over the border at Plymouth, and Paignton about a 2 hour drive from Newquay area of Cornwall

Down south I would suggest the New Forrest. Plenty of activities for children in the area and you are a stones throw away from some lovely seaside.
Further north I would head toward Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk Broads. Again plenty of seaside, Norfolk broads is good for a boat trip and there are some lovely villages on the broads. Norwich is a good town to visit.

Cottage in North Cornwall, it doesn't get any better.

I'd say Cornwall also. But I would look into finding somewere quite central to the places you might go to. This is because depending where you stay you can have a bit of a distance to travel to different area's if you wanted to do a different thing each day.
